Nevion cards arethe winning formula for Hibernia Networks’ local HD video circuit

JPEG2000 compression critical to high-qualitydisability winter sports broadcast from Sochi, Russia

Oxnard, CA, April 82014 – Nevion, a leader in transporting media from the camera to the home, today announced that global telecommunications services providerHibernia Networks has used its Ventura carrier-class, modular video compression and transport solutions to carry video over a local loop from the New York telecoms hub at 60 Hudson Street to its Point of Presence (POP) in Stamford, CT. The uni-directional HD circuit with JPEG 2000 compression was set up specifically to move content received directly from the sporting venues in Sochi, Russia.

“For this project we needed a transport solution that we could operate in a plug-and-play fashion, without the need for complex configuration; the Nevion technology was the best fit for us, meeting our highest-performance requirements,” said Wes Hanemayer, VP of video services at Hibernia Networks. “In terms of performance, Nevion’s JPEG 2000 solution enabled us to optimize our available bandwidth with very low latency.”

Within the network, four uncompressed HD video signals from Sochi were compressed with Nevion’s JPEG 2000 technology down to SD rates for transport at visually lossless bitrates using its Ventura VS901 and VS411 cards. The video streams were then packed into a single HD circuit for transmission, before being uncompressed at the receiver end. Due to the nature of the live sports content, the compression type used had to be frame-based in order to handle the high level of motion. It also had to be lowlatency. In fact, a complete encode/decode cycle took just 45ms.

“Our JPEG 2000 technology is extremely popular, with more than 2,000 of our codecs installed worldwide. With the operational benefits that it can bring, it’s easy to see why our customers like it so much,” said Mike Root, VP of Sales, Americas at Nevion. “Our products are helping organizations like Hibernia Networks to deliver professional quality content in realtime, without limitations.”
