JOINT SEALERS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY
A.Section Includes:
1.General: Provide sealants (caulking) where specified and where indicated on Drawings, unless otherwise noted.
2.Openings In Exterior Walls:
a.Provide sealant between new hollow metal frames and adjacent wall construction at exterior and interior sides of wall.
b.Provide sealant around interior and exterior edges of louver frames and adjacent wall construction, and edges of related exterior sills where sills meet wall construction at jamb opening.
c.Provide sealant around edges, at both exterior and interior sides, of other items penetrating exterior walls, unless noted to be provided by others; to include, but not be limited to pipes, conduits, and ducts.
3.Hollow Metal Frames in Interior Masonry Walls: Provide sealant between hollow metal frames and adjacent masonry wall construction at both sides of frames.
4.Hollow Metal Frames In Interior Gypsum Board Surfaced Walls:
a.Provide sealant around hollow metal frames (door, sidelight, and borrowed light) built into gypsum board surfaced metal stud framed walls.
b.Install sealant continuous around entire frame at both faces of wall as indicated on Drawings.
c.Acoustical sealants related to gypsum board walls are to be provided as a part of the work specified under Section 092116.
5.Joints In Masonry Walls: Provide sealant at control joints and expansion joints in exterior and interior masonry walls, except where there is another means of covering joint.
6.Joints In Precast Concrete Panels: Provide sealant at vertical and horizontal joints between and at edges of panels as indicated on Drawings.
7.Joints In Cast Stone/Cut Stone: Provide sealant at joints between and at edges of cast stone/cut stone units.

8.Door Sills: Provide full bed of sealant beneath thresholds at sills of exterior hollow metal doors.
9.Provide multicomponent polysulfide sealant to be watertight around conduits penetrating existing walls from tunnels to below grade at exterior of building.
10.Miscellaneous Materials: Provide joint cleaner, joint primer, bond breaker tape, and sealant backer rod where indicated on Drawings and as required in connection with sealing/caulking provided under this Section.
1.02 SUBMITTALS
A.General Requirements: Provide submittals in accordance with Section 013300.
B.Product Data: Submit sealant manufacturer=s Product Data, specifications, recommendations, and installation instructions.

C.Samples: Submit (2) sets of sealant manufacturer=s color samples for selection of colors for each type of sealant that will be exposed.
1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.Applicator Qualifications:
1.Installation of caulking materials to be performed only by persons experienced in caulking trade.
2.Workmanship to be of highest quality in accordance with best practice and in strict accordance with recommendations of material manufacturers.
3.Applicator shall be prepared to show evidence of workmanship on projects not less than 5years old.
1.04 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A.Packing and Shipping: Deliver materials in manufacturer's original, unopened packaging, with identification labels intact and legible.
B.Storage and Protection: Store materials in area protected from weather, moisture, open flame, and sparks.
1.05 SITE CONDITIONS
A.Environmental Requirements:
1.Meet sealant manufacturer=s recommendations for maximum and minimum application temperatures and humidity conditions.
2.Do not install sealant when temperature is below 40degreesF unless approved by sealant manufacturer, in writing, and acceptable to Architect.
1.06 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING
A.Coordination: Coordinate work of this Section with work related to masonry restoration and to removal of existing windows and installation of new windows.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
A.Colors of Sealant: Architect will select colors of each sealant that will be exposed and has the option to select from products of as many acceptable manufacturers as required to obtain colors desired, or to obtain custom colors if they can be provided at no extra cost.

2.09 MILDEWRESISTANT SILICONE SEALANT

1.Use O Joint Substrates: Coated glass, color anodic aluminum, aluminum coated with a highperformance coating, galvanized steel, and ceramic tile.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 EXAMINATION
A.Verification of Conditions: Examine joints to be sealed for construction defects which would adversely affect execution of work.
B.Concrete Curing: Ensure that concrete has cured as recommended by sealant manufacturer.
C.Masonry Curing: Ensure that masonry has cured not less than 28days.
D.Correction of Deficiencies: Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
3.02 PREPARATION

A.Coordination: Coordinate sealant installation with application of paint on adjacent surfaces.
B.Surface Preparation:
1.Prepare joints in accordance with manufacturer=s recommendations.
2.Surfaces to receive sealants shall be clean, dry, and free from dust, particles, loose aggregate, paint, corrosion, oil, grease, wax, tar, asphalt, mastic compounds, waterproofing agents, or form release agents.
3.Sweep concrete and masonry surfaces with a stiff brush and blow clean.
4.Wipe down metal and glass surfaces with mineral spirits or similar approved solvents.
5.Remove lacquer from surfaces of aluminum adjacent to sealants.
C.Masking: Mask as necessary to provide a neat and acceptable application.
D.Priming: If sealant manufacturer recommends that a surface to receive sealants be primed, provide materials and perform work in accordance with sealant manufacturer's recommendations. If a staining type primer is used, apply material in a manner that will prevent exposed stain residue.
1.Provide primer at joints which will be traffic bearing.
2.Provide primer at concrete and masonry exterior joints scheduled to receive sealant.
E.Sealant BackUp:
1.Where openings are more than 3/4inch in depth, fill joint to within 3/4inch of surface with backup material.
2.Backup material to be not less than1/4inch thicker than width of joint opening, making certain that material is under compression after insertion.
3.Exercise care while inserting backup material to maintain space for proper depth of sealant, allowing for recess created when tooling finish surface of sealant.
3.03 APPLICATION
A.Sealant Installation Locations and Sealant Types: As follows unless otherwise indicated.
1.Exterior Vertical Joints: Seal with a multicomponent polyurethane sealant.
2.Interior Vertical Joints: Seal with a multi-component polyurethane sealant.
3.Exterior and Interior Vertical Joints: Seal with a multi-component polyurethane sealant.

4.Joints in Exterior Soffits: Seal with a multi-component polyurethane sealant.
5.Exterior and Interior Joints in Horizontal Concrete Slabs: Seal with a multicomponent selfleveling polyurethane sealant.
6.Joints In Swimming Pool Tank and Surrounding Deck Area: Seal with multicomponent polysulfide sealant.
a.Interior vertical expansion and control joints in masonry walls enclosing and open to swimming pool room, including sealants around door frames, borrowed light frames, and other items which penetrate these walls.
b.Expansion and control joints of pool tank and in deck area around pool tank.
7.Joints at Stainless Steel Countertop: Clear silicone sealant at joints between countertop and adjacent walls.
8.Joints Around Penetrations of Exterior Walls Below Grade Level: Seal with a multicomponent polysulfide sealant.
B.Sealant Consistency:
1.Caulking sealants shall be of proper consistency to be readily worked and shall not be thinned or diluted in any manner.
2.Heating, mixing, and application shall be in strict accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
C.Depth of Sealant: Apply sealant to a depth of 1/2 joint width, but not less than 1/4inch or more than 1/2inch deep, unless otherwise recommended by sealant manufacturer.
D.Application Procedure:
1.Apply sealant with a caulking gun using proper nozzles.
2.Use sufficient pressure to properly fill the joints with sealant to the backup material.
E.Tooling Sealant:
1.After joints have been completely filled and before time that skinning or curing begins, neatly tool joints to eliminate air pockets or voids and to provide a smooth, neat appearing finish in intimate contact with interfaces.
2.Do not use tooling agents that discolor sealants or adjacent surfaces or are not approved by sealant manufacturer.
3.After tooling, surface of sealant shall be free of ridges, wrinkles, sags, air pockets, and embedded impurities.

3.04 CLEANING
A.General Requirements: As work progresses, immediately clean materials adjacent to joints, by mechanical means or with solvents as recommended by sealant manufacturer, to eliminate evidence of soiling or damage to adjacent surfaces caused by misapplied joint sealer materials.
3.05 PROTECTION
A.General Requirements:
1.Protect joint sealants during and after curing period from contact with contaminating substances, or from damage resulting from construction operations or other causes, so they are without deterioration or damage at time of Substantial Completion.
2.If, despite being protected, damage or deterioration occurs, cut out and remove damaged or deteriorated joint sealants. Install new sealants so repaired areas are indistinguishable from original work.
