2017-2018 Girls Basketball (Gr. 5-6)

We are looking forward to the season! Our goals for the season are:

1) To teach sound fundamentals while instilling a love for the game!!

2) Teach what it means to be part of a team and promote good sportsmanship.

3) Allow each player to develop to the best of her ability regardless of their skill level.

Other important info:

❖ Absolutely NO jewelry is to be worn at practice or a game.

❖ Do NOT bring your child if she is sick!!

❖ Please walk your child into the building for each practice.

❖ Please wear basketball/tennis shoes and shorts or sweat pants when practicing. As the weather worsen, please carry in shoes and change once inside.

❖ Please bring a water bottle marked with your name.

❖ We will be using a size 28.5" ball, on 10 ft. rim

❖ If you are NOT going to be at the game or practice, please contact your coach.

❖ There will be no practice if Canal Winchester has a snow day. I will e-mail and make a call-out if there is a cancellation for a Sunday game or weekend practice.

Rules:

This league is under the rules of the OHSAA except:

1) Games are 6 minute quarters with a stopped clock. Overtimes are 3 minutes with 1 additional timeout.

2) Each player must play the same amount of time. No players permitted to sit out a second time until all players have sat out. The girls are here to learn and they cannot learn from the bench.

3) 5 minute half time.

4) 3 timeouts per game. Timeouts are 1 minute.

5) Regulation foul line will be used. Each player will have 5 fouls before fouling out of game. When team fouls reach 7 then 1-1 and will be given. Then once team fouls reach 10 opposing team will be given 2 free throws.

6) 3 second lane violation is in effect.

7) No full court press except the last 2 minutes of the game or overtime.

8) Defense is man-to-man. No zone defense except for 4th quarter.

9) No trapping or double teaming. Help side defense is permitted in the lane if the offensive player is shooting or passing. Once the defensive player recovers, help side returns to her own player.

10) Referees should NEVER be addressed by any spectator, coach or player in a negative manner. Most of our referees are CW High School players who are spending a large part of their weekend working for the benefit of our program and as role models to our players. Any discrepancies regarding a call made on the basketball floor are to be brought to the attention of the commissioner. Code of conduct will be fully enforced!!
