Course Overview: This semester course covers the philosophy, organization, and functioning of government in the United States at the local, state, and national levels. It covers the political and decision-making processes and the philosophical basis on the American constitutional system as a form of democratic government. Current events concerning controversial political topics will also be covered when relevant to the content of the class.
Participation: Many of the class sessions will be conducted as lecture and activity. In order for this to work, student preparation and participation is critical. Students who disrupt the learning process for others (such as disrupting class lectures and activities) will not earn all participation points available, and as a result, will earn a lower overall grade. Students who are "on the border" between grades at the end of the semester may be given the higher grade if their overall participation has been commendable.
Class Rules and Expectations
1. Come to class prepared -- This means having all assignments completed prior to the beginning of class and being seated and ready to begin when the second bell rings. Textbook, pen/pencil and paper is a must for all class sessions, and a 3-ring binder is highly recommended for easy organization of all class notes and handouts.
2. Respect the rights of others -- Only one person talks while everyone else listens. Treat others with dignity and respect. Students should feel safe to exchange ideas. No question is a "stupid" question! Professional courtesy should always prevail.
3. Respect school property as well as the property of others -- This includes returning any borrowed materials to the owner in a timely fashion (e.g. lecture notes, handouts, project materials).
Make up procedures: Students who have an excused absence will have 2 days for each day missed to turn work in on time. Thereafter, the assignment will be not be accepted. Make up tests will be arranged by the teacher. Grading scale is on the backside of this paper
