drawing Shoes part I

Introduction to drawing shoes: Show examples of professional renderings to class. Demo drawing a shoe in orthographic views. Add color and shading with markers, colored pencils and pastels.

Class work:

Class draws orthographic views of an existing shoe or sneaker they brought with them to class. Draw left and right sides of the shoe, as well as the top and bottom. Pay attention to the proportions of the shoe, and make sure your views line up with each other. Using the methods of construction taught in previous classes, construct the shoe in a perspective drawing. Use centerlines and contour lines to show form.

Midterm grades are given individually during class.

Assignment:

Start early this week! There are several parts to this week’s assignment

Draw 3 pages of shoes: Design and draw one shoe on each page of newsprint. Each page must have orthographic views of the shoe (tread and both sides). Use pastel for shading and highlights, and markers for shadows and outlines and color breaks.

Make a blue foam model of one of your shoes: Choose one of your three shoe designs from above and make a rough foam model using 1” thick blue or pink foam glued together. Do not put details of the shoe into the model, but strive to duplicate the overall shape and gesture. Draw a center/contour line down the middle of the shoe.

Draw three views of your foam model in perspective on one page of newsprint, using the contour lines of the foam as guides to show the form.

Focus on:

·  Proportions of the shoe.

·  Line weight to show speed and gesture of the shoe.

·  Use 1 inch thick foam glued together to show contour lines of the shoe

·  HAVE FUN! Shoes are much more fun to draw than cubes.
