Purpose of the Job

To work on a rota covering both admissions and the shop(s), ensuring a consistently high standard of customer service is delivered to our visitors. To contribute to achieving sales targets by ensuring that visitors are encouraged to purchase through proactive selling and excellent visual merchandising.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To ensure that excellent customer service standards are delivered at all times.
  • To accurately record visitor profiles and numbers through the electronic admissions system
  • To ensure you have a good knowledge of the museum, the collection and the location in order to provide visitors with general information regarding their visit
  • To promote and maximise the sales of the Museum’s Guidebooks and where applicable, audio guides and promote and capture Gift Aid scheme.
  • To promote and maximise the sales of tickets for special events, exhibitions etc.
  • To maximise sales in the shop(s) through proactive selling and excellent product knowledge
  • To answer customer enquiries and deal with complaints calling on the support of the management team when appropriate
  • To ensure that the Museum’s financial and cash handling procedures are strictly adhered to in relation to audit and security requirements
  • To help maintain the accuracy of the EPOS System by ensuring the stock is correctly keyed at point of sale, customer returns, write-offs, markdowns, price changes and supplier stock returns are administered according to retail guidelines
  • To assist with deliveries ensuring that stock is safely and neatly stored in the stockroom and that relevant paperwork is completed accurately and without delay
  • To ensure that stock is correctly ticketed and coded and that when scanned at point of sale prices are correct
  • To ensure that both shops and admissions desks are clean, well presented and merchandised to the highest of standards at all times.
  • To inform the Retail and Admissions Management Team when stock or sundries are running low
  • To assist the Management Team with the preparation and counting of stock at all stock takes in accordance with Museum requirements and procedures.
  • To work on a rota which will include regular weekend working, including Bank Holidays, air shows, and special events. Occasional evening and early morning working is also required.
  • To attend daily morning briefing and weekly training sessions
  • To ensure your punctuality, attendance and personal appearance meets the Museum’s standards
  • To ensure that you are fully aware of all Trading Department policies and procedures and are also well informed of any changes to policies and procedures within the Museum as a whole.
  • To bring to the attention of the Retail & Admissions Manager any issues that may be prejudicial to the successful and smooth running of the trading operation generally.
  • To be responsible for the health, safety and welfare of staff and customers, ensuring compliance with all legislation and Museum policy.
  • To work in the other London branches to provide cover for staff shortages as and when required
  • To undertake any other related duties when required by the Retail & Admissions Management team.

All staff are required to attend "Introduction to Health & Safety Course".This basic course to gain awareness as to what the employer and the employee are required to do to support Health & Safety legislation.

Terms and Conditions

Contract Type:Fixed Term 24 March until 28 October 2012.

Hours:Normal hours of work are 9.45am to 6.15pm, which is 7½ hours net per day.

We have a number of shifts Monday to Sunday working around the visitors needs these are 9.45am to 6.15pm, 11am to 3pm and 2.15pm to 6.15pm and a weekend post

You will be required to work on Bank Holidays in accordance with the roster. You may also be required to work additional Bank Holidays, Airshows and other special events and on occasionsto work unsocial hours.

3 Bank Holidays have been consolidated into the basic salary. Any additional Bank Holidays will be paid at the appropriate overtime rate or can be taken as time in lieu.

In the first 13 months of service you are only eligible to Statutory Sick Pay.

The successful candidate will be on probation for 6 months.

Salary: £13,156 per annum pro rata. Salary is paid monthly in arrears.

Annual Leave: The annual leave allowance is 25 days per annum pro rata.

Smoking Policy: The Museum has introduced a total ban on smoking in all its buildings.
