Job Title:Youth Worker

Work base:Homeworking or office, with lots of work in the community

Hours:Full time, 37 hours per week, flexible.

Salary Scale:£20,000 - £23,000

Reporting to:A board member

Professional Supervision will be provided by an experienced and qualified Christian Youth Worker.

Job PurposeN DUES AND RESPONSIBILITIESMAIN DUTIES AND SPONSIBIIES

  • To lead the development of the Newbury YMCA's youth work, under overall direction of the Board.
  • To develop relationships and networks and undertake other tasks to further the work of the YMCA, with a view to our vision to establish a youth cafe in Newbury.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. To initiate, develop and maintain a programme of clubs and activities for young people.
a) To organise locations and other practical arrangements for a variety of projects
b) To prepare and lead suitable activities
c) To build effective working relationships with young people which are supportive, accepting and challenging.
d) To discuss and share the Christian Faith as led by the young people and their questions.
e) To consult and engage young people in developing projects.
f) To have budget responsibility for youth activities and submit budget information to the Board.
  1. To recruit, supervise and train volunteers, and ensure that all projects have appropriate numbers of suitable volunteers.
  2. To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the projects and report to the Board.
  3. To work collaboratively with other agencies: churches, voluntary organisations, schools and Parish/Town Councils in the development of new projects.
  4. To be the designated person responsible for Safeguarding for all YMCA Youth Activities.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

KEY CRITERIA / ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
Qualifications and Training / Recognised JNC Youth Work Qualification or equivalent significant experience of Christian Youth Work gained over a number of years. / Graduate.
Wide range of short courses relevant to youth and community work.
Competence Summary
(Knowledge, abilities, skills, experience) / A comprehensive understanding of Christian youth work including national trends and initiatives.
Ability to work independently, using own initiative to develop and deliver new projects.
Able to work collaboratively with other agencies, churches, voluntary organisations, schools and Parish/Town Councils in the development of new initiatives.
Experience of supervising, recruiting and motivating volunteers to run youth work activities.
A good understanding of safeguarding and ability to make appropriate action in the interests of young people.
Able to organise and plan for regular youth activities and special events
Able to collate and communicate financial information to the Board. / 2 years post qualification experience (or up to five years experience if not qualified) preferably in a Christian youth work setting.
Experience of establishing new youth clubs and/ or projects.
Excellent networking skills.
Attendance at safeguarding training in the last two years.
Work-related Personal Requirements / A committed Christian (this is a genuine occupational requirement) with a calling for Youth Work.
Able to develop effective working relationships with young people and adults in a variety of settings.
Good oral and written communication skills and competent in the use of information technology. / Able to use IT and social networking to promote activities and communicate
with young people.

  • Suitable to work with children and young people (this post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure).
  • If unable to drive, willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work evenings and at weekends as required by the needs of the post.
