Overview of department:
The Unix Server & Storage Team is responsible for support and maintenance of allServers running the Unix Operating System and Shared Storage Systems within SLC. The team defines and maintains hardware and software standards for the Unix and storage estate, ensuring ‘best practice’ standards, policies and procedures are followed.

Job Purpose:
The Unix Server & Storage Analyst is responsible for the installation of new RHEL and IBM AIX Servers and for maintenance of them with a particular focus on ensuring server availability, the currency of OS Patching Levels, and successful completion of regular backups. They will also be responsible for configuration of shared (SAN) storage resources to support new requirements and maintain the underlying platform. They will provide out-of-hours support where necessary. They will be required to ensure that they keep abreast of new technology developments and providing in-house training where required.
Key responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support for Unix and Server Storage in support of SLC’s corporate, departmental and individual objectives.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure that the Unix and storage infrastructure and associated technologies remain current, supported, highly available, operate efficiently, perform within agreed targets, and deliver a secure platform on which SLC can carry out its business.
  • Take part in patching the underlying OS of managed systems, and successfully backing them up on a regular basis.
  • Provide support to users of the system, working in collaboration with other operations and wider technical community in order to diagnose and fix service affecting issues.
  • Suggest and take part in service improvement initiatives to ensure the server estate is current and supportable
  • Manage change into the infrastructure following the company change process.
  • Participate in business continuity and disaster recovery planning and activities.
  • Undertake tasks as assigned by Line Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working in a large ICT infrastructure support environment involving 500+ Servers running a mixture of Red Hat Linux & AIX Operating Systems.
  • This experience must include experience of server virtualisation, shared storage (SAN) technologies and networking
  • Must have knowledge and experience of administering and supporting RHEL 3, 4, 5 & 6 running on physical and virtual environments
  • Knowledge and experience of administering and supporting AIX 5.3, 6.1 & 7.1 running on IBM Power 5, 6, 7 & 8 hardware, and experience of Power Virtualisation.
  • Working knowledge of Brocade SAN and IBM Storage Subsystems (including XIV, V7000 and SVC)
  • Any knowledge and experience of administering and supporting Tru-64 Unix and underlying HP Alpha hardware an advantage
  • Working knowledge and experience of administering and supporting server backups with Legato Networker a bonus
