Job Title:Specialty Registrar in Special Care Dentistry

Accountable to:Clinical Director of Dental Service/Lead Clinicians/Educational Supervisor

Salary Scale:Salary will be in accordance with the Specialty Registrar Pay Circular (Medical & Dental)

Hours: Full time/part time/job share

Full time= 37.5 hours

Term:This training post is for a fixed term of three years.

JOB SUMMARY

This training post will be based at health centres in Oxfordshire. Duties include provisionof a full

range of dental care to patients of the Salaried Primary Care Dental Service, including priority

groups, special needs adults, children and other patients who would not otherwise be able to

access emergency or routine care. This may include patients in nursing and care homes,

hospitals, young offenders’, and mental health units.

The post holder will be required to actively contribute to an Educational Agreement and meet the

agreed learning objectives. The successful applicant will be expected to registerfor the MSc in

Sedation and Special Care Dentistry at KingsCollegeHospital, London and will be eligible for

the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training in SpecialCare Dentistry (CCST)

subject to satisfactory progress.

The post is designed to meet the requirements of Oxford Deanery for training programmes

leading to registration with the General Dental Council as a specialist in Special Care

Dentistry.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To provide high quality oral healthcare including treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia as required. To understand and demonstrate all aspects of pain and anxiety management particularly for anxious patients.
  1. To work collaboratively with primary and secondary care dental colleagues.
  1. Provide dental care for children and adults with special needs including those who are medically compromised
  1. Provide emergency dental care for patients currently without a dentist.
  1. Attend and actively contribute to an Educational Agreement, meet the agreed learning objectives, including completing an approved MSc, together with other training and educational activities as required to fulfil the curriculum and complete the training programme in Special Care Dentistry.

  1. To work collaboratively and support the oral health promotion team, the dental therapists and the epidemiology team within Oxfordshire.
  1. Manage the day to day operations and staff of clinics in liaison with members of the senior management team, Lead Clinicians and Specialists.
  1. To take an active role in conjunction with other Senior Clinical colleagues in the teaching of clinical skills to other members of the dental team as appropriate.
  1. Assist and co-operate with the Joint Heads of Services in planning and delivering the Salaried Primary Care Dental Service in Oxfordshire.
  1. Monitor and update policy, taking account of existing Trust policies and liaising with other members of the senior management team, Lead Clinicians & Specialists.
  1. Undertake training as required by the Trust and as needed to maintain standards of clinical practice.
  1. Take part in all aspects of clinical governance, including GDC lifelong learning, clinical audit, peer review and clinical supervision.
  1. Maintain close working relationships with other disciplines as related to these duties.
  1. Undertake responsibility for a given area of clinical practice including the coordination and management duties involved in that particular area.
  1. Be responsible for data collection and reports as required for the Salaried Primary Care Dental Service.
  1. Other such duties as may be delegated.

MEMBERSHIP OF PROFESSIONAL DEFENCE ORGANISATION

The holder of this post will be covered by the employing Authority in relation to claims for negligence but it is advisable for individuals to maintain membership of a Defence Organisation so that independent advice is available to them on all matters relating to their professional activity.

INFECTION CONTROL

Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.

All staff employed by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust have the following key responsibilities:

  • Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and/or between each patient contact.
  • Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.

TRANSPORT

Staff are required to work within a number of sites. As some of these sites are not easily served by public transport, the post-holder will be expected to make necessary travel arrangements to meet this need.

Therefore, ideally, the post- holder will hold a current driving licence and provide a car for use as required in the performance of their duties. Payment for the use of the car will be made in accordance with the appropriate terms and conditions of service.

The post holder is required to take responsible care for the health & safety of themselves and other persons who may be affected by their omissions at work. The post holder is also required to co-operate with the Trust to ensure that statutory and departmental regulations are adhered to.

CONFIDENTIALITY AND DATA SECURITY

All employees are required to comply fully with the duties and responsibilities outlined in the Trust Information Governance Policy. You are required to preserve the confidentiality of any information regarding patients, staff records in your area (in connection with their employment) and the Trust business and this obligation shall continue in perpetuity.

You have a responsibility to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, NHS Confidentiality guidelines (e.g. Caldicott, GDC.) and any code of practice on Confidentiality and Data Protection, as accepted by the Trust. Departmental codes of practice and procedures for confidentiality are available from the head of department. In addition:

  • To be responsible for addressing all security and confidentiality training needs of all your staff. This should be done on induction and then on an annual basis to update the staff.
  • Should you have any matters of concern, you are welcome to, and encouraged to, raise your concerns with your Manager/Director.

You are required to ensure that all information collected, stored and used is done so in compliance with the above Act and any relevant Trust Policy.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

This includes attendance at mandatory training sessions and any other supervisory session or training module which your line management believes will contribute to personal and/or to team growth.
