Summary:

The Site Manager provides leadership and direction for the marine and vessel planning for the terminal and overall cargo handling operation. The incumbent will direct and supervise the work of terminal management and Superintendents to ensure an efficient, safe and productive operation. The Site Manager will be held accountable for achieving operational and financial goals while remaining within specified budget guidelines.

Requirements:

§ BS/BA degree in Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience working in management

§ Minimum of five (5) + years of progressive management experience.

§ Knowledge of terminal operations, planning and stevedore operations.

§ Experience with computerized operating systems.

§ Experience with related union contracts and managing labor.

§ Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

§ Provides operating direction for the terminal and its management team members

§ Develops and maintains professional customer and port relations by identifying and meeting customer needs. Ensures that staff and labor demonstrate customer service principles.

§ Develops short range business plans designed to achieve company goals and objectives.

§ Develops and operates within approved fiscal budget limits, ensuring targeted P&L results.

§ Complies with area accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures. Provides regular training and on-going feed-back to staff and labor.

§ Secures, evaluates and develops staff who will assure the level of performance and productivity necessary to achieve current and future objectives; Hold regular meetings with staff members to maintain communication lines

§ Ensures that site staff works effectively as a team with each other and with other Ports America staff. Ensures effective and regular communication and high employee morale.

§ Keeps General Manager aware of current operations status through regular communication and by issuing periodic reports.

§ Works closely with local and district stevedoring associations and keeps General Manager current of changes in work practices.

§ Ensures positive relations with labor and union officials and that labor policies and union contracts are understood and followed.

§ Develops, communicates and maintains operating and administrative procedures (consistent with area procedures and objectives) designed to provide required information and facilitate internal practices.

§ Ensures that all Ports America policies, procedures and controls are followed and that required reports are completed accurately, submitted on time to appropriate staff members, customers and other designated personnel, and that appropriate staff and labor have a full understanding of these procedures.

§ Supports Ports America sales and marketing goals by participating in sales activities through new business development and long term customer contracts.

§ Ensures high levels of productivity and efficiency by assessing operational practices and procedures, and by developing and executing appropriate plans, and directing the stevedoring and terminal activities.

§ Works closely with planners, superintendents, vessel operators and their agents in developing efficient and appropriate plans to load / unload vessels.

§ Evaluates and determines appropriate labor and equipment requirements for each vessel, ensuring availability of labor, and that equipment is available and in efficient and safe working condition.

§ Completes other tasks and projects as assigned.

Capabilities:

§ Must have working knowledge of managerial and leadership principles, with the ability to influence other management team members and lead a department of technically proficient individuals

§ Must have familiarity with all aspects of the systems support for the terminal, including software applications, equipment and work flow

§ Must have extensive knowledge of safety, health and environmental issues as they affect the workplace, including local regulations, national requirements, and governmental agency requirements

§ Must have working knowledge of budget preparation and financial applications

§ The ability to exercise sound business judgment in order to set direction and establish priorities

§ Capable of executing exceptional time management, due to fast-moving, demanding work environment

§ The ability to exercise discretion and good judgment, with an ability to understand the effect of decisions within the operation

Physical Working Conditions

§ The ability to climb up and down a latter on a vessel on occasion and when needed.

§ The ability to work in changing weather conditions

§ The ability to work in an environment with moving objects and machinery
