Role purpose

To plan and manage most complex of the projects or projects of strategic importance to the NMC from outset to closure, including co-ordinating and justifying business case development to stakeholders.

Key accountabilities

Project Management

  • Ensure the project objectives are aligned to corporate strategy and project deliverables delivers outcomes identified in local or corporate strategy.
  • Develop business cases, product descriptions and project plans for project approval and project budget approval
  • To leadprojects so they are managed effectively and efficiently throughout the project lifecycle to deliver on time and within agreed budgets and to NMC standards.
  • To ensure that projects meet business requirements and quality expectations.
  • Ensuring project benefits are tracked and reported
  • Ensure budget and resources are committed by relevant managers (including third parties).
  • Manages day-to-day operational aspects of a project and scope, and escalate appropriately when required.
  • Monitor performance against plans and take effective corrective action if required
  • Matrix management of resources across the organisation.
  • Manage overall project communication to ensure agreement is reached through compromise where conflict exists with internal and external stakeholders.
  • To report on project progress to project sponsors and programme board where appropriate.
  • To coordinate the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants in order to deliver projects according to plan.
  • Set up and maintain the necessary project governance structures in line with the NMC Project framework.
  • Ensure that risks are identified, recorded, assessed and managed appropriately and escalated where required.
  • Ensure that all relevant external and internal stakeholders are involved and communicated with throughout the key stages of the project.
  • To provide best practice guidance and mentorship to other project managers and develop talent pool within the organisation.

Project information and documentation

  • To scope projects, create and manage project plans as instructed. Revising as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • To ensure project documentation is complete, current, and stored appropriately.
  • To work with finance to determine project costing, resource requirements and management reporting.
  • To liaise with appropriate areas of the organisation to gather relevant project data.
  • To assist users to produce requirements documents.

Other responsibilities

  • Help the NMC ensure timely delivery against its business plan.
  • Work collaboratively with the programme managers to ensure the project is integrated into the portfolio and cross-project dependencies are managed.
  • Provide supervision, coaching and mentoring to other project managers and to those who want to develop their career in project management
  • Deliver project management bite size training to group of people to help develop capability within the organisation

Qualifications and experience

  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent experience
  • Prince 2 practitioner level qualified
  • Experience of managing high value complex or strategic projects through full project life cycle with strong focus on benefits management
  • Experience of preparing and presenting plans and reports to a wide variety of stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and professional environment
  • Experience of working with a range of internal and external stakeholders and managing stakeholder expectations up to Board and Director level
  • Proven track record of delivering solutions utilising third parties and/or in an outsourced environment
  • Experience of managing resources including budgets, internal staff and contracts with third-party suppliers
  • Experience of managing risks and issues in a project setting

Specific experience

  • For policy development role – demonstrable experience of delivering high impact policy development projects
  • For software development role – demonstrable experience of working with range of software development methodologies, such as waterfall and in particular Agile.
