Anthony Nolan background

30,000 people a year in the UK are diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukaemia. Leukaemia is the most common childhood cancer. Blood cancer is brutal and indiscriminate and for many people, chemotherapy and other drug treatments fail.

But there is hope- a blood stem cell (or bone marrow) transplant, that can provide the chance of a cure. A transplant works by taking blood stem cells from a healthy donor and giving them to the patient. The donor and patient must have the same tissue type- and there are millions of variations.

At Anthony Nolan, we’ve been striving since 1974 to give patients with blood cancer the best possible chance of a cure. Every day, we use our register to match remarkable people who are willing to donate their blood stem cells to save the life of someone they’ve never met.

Anthony Nolan finds transplant donors for three people every day. However, for every three people we help, there is one we can’t find a matching donor for. Our aim is to provide a lifesaving transplant for every person with blood cancer who needs our help.

Community Fundraising at Anthony Nolan

The Community Fundraising team at Anthony Nolan manages and develops relationships with:

  • Individuals organising their own fundraising
  • Volunteer groups (Friends groups)
  • Local organisations such as Sports clubs and Round Table groups
  • Schools
  • University Student groups
  • Faith groups
  • In memory / In celebration giving
  • Appeals set up by patient’s family and friends

We also work with volunteers across the UK who represent Anthony Nolan locally in their communities.

We have a good track record in Community fundraising but feel this has great potential to grow further for the charity, particularly via developing our local volunteer’s network, groups and supporting people to do their own fundraising activities. Many of these contacts became involved with the charity as a result of a personal link to someone with blood cancer or by donating stem cells themselves.

We have a number of strengths to draw on as we look to develop Community fundraising. Our case for support is emotive and unique: we are the only cancer charity who can offer people the chance of a cure. Historically, we have many community contacts to tap into including a major relationship with the Round Table.

The Community team at Anthony Nolan acts as the central hub of the Fundraising Division, liaising closely with the Corporate, Events and Major Gifts teams to identify and pass on contacts and opportunities.

This role is a great opportunity to continue to contribute to the development of Community fundraising for a charity with an emotive cause, innovative plans for the future and an organisational commitment to Community fundraising.

We are looking for an experienced fundraising professional who has an excellent understanding of relationship management, team and volunteer management and who has the drive and enthusiasm necessary to grow these programmes.
