Reports to: Challenge Course Manager& Camp Manager

Mission/Authority
The essential purpose of Young Life is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to young people. This is largely accomplished at Young Life camps through activities that illustrate certain aspects of Christ's life and teachings. Each activity conducted by Young Life staff in the camp environment is intended to convey a specific message about Christ to young people, in a manner that is coordinated with other activities, leading to a continual spiritual experience during the week.
The duties of the ropes intern are an integral part of the spiritual program of the camp. The intern must be able to convey a sense of Christ-like hospitality and concern as he/she relates to campers, guests and staff. All staff members are expected to model Christian principles and the standards of Young Life at work and outside of work; staff members must represent Young Life positively and professionally within the local community.
The purpose of this position is to manage all aspects of the challenge course activities under the supervision of the challenge course manager.
Essential Duties
1. Minister to, direct and encourage campers, guests, volunteer leaders and staff in a manner consistent with Christian principles, Young Life’s mission and the spiritual program of the camp.
2. Convey a sense of Christ-like hospitality and concern to campers, guests, leaders and staff.
3. Work with other staff and camp leadership to help integrate the camp program into the challenge course activities.
4. Train summer staff to safely operate challenge course stations and elements.
5. Complete a comprehensive training for operation of challenge course areas by the challenge course manager.
6. Train summer staff according to the Lake Champion challenge course manual and the training guidelines/outlines provided by the challenge course manager.
7. Instruct summer staff in procedures for the operation of stations/elements, emergency procedures and other responsibilities as required.
8. Train and practice emergency procedures with staff at the beginning and during each staff assignment.
9. Oversee the daily operation of the challenge courses (high ropes course, pamper pole, climbing wall, water zip, giant swing).

10. Perform weekly inspections on challenge courses.

11. Assist in a Quarterly Inspection of all challenge courses.
12. Assist the head leaders with scheduling rides for each camp week.
13. Assist the challenge course manager with ordering equipment and supplies.
14. Be available to assist the host with special program events such as morning games, carnival and tableau.
15. Be able to rise to the unexpected needs of campers, staff, and guests that are not related to the challenge courses.
16. Attend all intern devotions and functions.
Qualifications
1. Must display a mature and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. Complete and pass challenge course certification training by a Young Life approved vendor.
3. Acceptance of and compliance with Young life's statements of faith and mission purpose statement, and Young Life's policies and principles.
4. Previous Young Life summer staff experience, preferably in challenge course activities or equivalent.
5. Must be self-motivated, able to work and lead others with minimal supervision and posses a willingness to learn and accept direction from property staff and assigned team.
6. Must possess ability to remain calm in stressful situations and act appropriately to calm those around them.
