The Children’s Community is an ambitious 10 year programme aiming to improve the life chances of the 1,000 children and young people growing up on the Pembury Estate in Hackney. Purpose of the role:

The Community Development Worker will lead on community engagement and consultation and develop new partnerships to drive the Children’s Community strategy forward.The role involves working alongside established community groups such as the Dads Zone, Parents Forum and Resident Steering Group, as well as seeking new opportunities for residents to develop peer-led initiatives. The Community Development Worker will ensure residents are involved in decision making at all levels within the Children’s Community and grow peer support networks for residents. S/he will also take a lead on outreach and communications for the estate, ensuring all residents are informed of activities and events which are of interest and benefit to them.

The post holder will be based in the flagship Pembury Community Centre receiving over 550 visitors each week. S/he will work in a small Children’s Community team comprising youth workers, a parent adviser and employment and training advisers. The Centre also hosts a wider team of Peabody housing specialists working in Hackney, including neighbourhood managers, welfare benefits advisers and revenue officers.

Role specific responsibilities:

To support, mentor and build the capacity of community groups on the Pembury Estate

To work with the wider Pembury estate team to develop peer-led initiatives and peer support networks for Pembury residents

To lead on consultations with local people of all ages about their priorities and feed this effectively into the development of Children’s Community plans

To ensure residents are involved in decision making within the Children’s Community at all levels.

To support and supervise volunteers

To take a lead on events on the estate

To carry out outreach and lead on communications with residents through door knocking, newsletters and social media

To identify gaps and opportunities in local provision and support the creation of new projects in these areas, in line with the Children’s Community strategy and resident priorities

To create links and partnerships with voluntary organisations and a wide range of stakeholders in Hackney

To work effectively with other Peabody colleagues on the estate so that we deliver ‘joined up’ services

To update and maintain all project records and complete the required paperwork needed by external funders and for internal monitoring purposes

Monitor, evaluate and analyse the effectiveness of community development projects

To follow Peabody’s Health and Safety policies and procedures to ensure, as far as is practicable, your own safety and that of others in the workplace. You may be required to undertake specific Health and Safety roles such as Fire Warden or First Aider as part of your duties.

Skills/Experience required:

Essential:

A track record of success in previous community development roles focused on building on community assets and developing community led initiatives

A track record of running successful community events and activities

A track record of designing and delivering projects

Experience of supporting and supervising volunteers

An ability to communicate well with people of all ages and backgrounds; strong written communication skills

An ability to manage conflict and be diplomatic

An accountable mindset, self-motivated and able to take responsibility for own work

Be flexible to a demanding workload which may result in working antisocial hours

Facilitation and mentoring skills

Intermediate IT skills including Word and Excel

Desirable:

Experience of providing direct capacity building training to residents and community groups, and training relating to the setting up and running of organisations and projects

Knowledge of the London Borough of Hackney
