Job Title:Math TEACHER, 10 MONTH, PT

FLSA Status: Exempt

Description:Within the curricular program at Holy Family Academy, our goal is to innovate through personalized learning, engage students through community partnerships and the Corporate Internship Program and inspire them through active learning and inquiry to develop empowered leaders prepared for life and work. The study of mathematics is the study of relationships, structure, and problem solving. Through math, students learn about patterns, chance, form, algorithms and change. They learn to observe, predict, analyze, and solve problems related to routine daily tasks. The Math teacher at HFA will be a part of a team that will aim to facilitate a math program that leverages blended learning and integrates math topics such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry and analysis. Students will be in mixed grade-levels and work towards mastery of the topics at their own pace. Students who complete the Math curriculum at the proficient level after four years should be fully prepared for future academic work at the college level in mathematics.

Within the math program at HFA, students will have opportunities to learn content in both geometry and data analysis and statistics while they are learning algebraic skills and algebraic representations of mathematical concepts. Exposure to relevant applications of algebra integrated with statistics and geometry will help instill more meaning and sense making in his or her algebra experience and lay a foundation for transition options to college mathematics.

1.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Promote the philosophy and mission of Holy Family in the provision of service.

  1. Understands and implements the mission, philosophy and values of HFA helping children and families lead responsible lives and develop healthy relationships. Demonstrates the intrinsic value of each person in all interactions and in the making of all decisions on the job.
  2. Personally modeling and empowering students to live out Holy Family values of faithful listening, loving relationships, recognizing God in the every day, and a commitment to social justice.
  3. Actively participate in the character development of every HFA student by creating a culture of spirituality and prayer, achievement, goal setting, and high expectations.
  4. Participates in special activities and functions of our affiliated organization, Holy Family Institute.
  1. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning for and facilitating an engaging teaching block where student learning is personalized through the use of blended learning

  1. Math teachers will personalize student learning through the use of the blended learning math software and actively use the lab rotation model of blended learning providing a mix of: individual learning time, peer to peer learning and small group remediation and acceleration.
  2. Actively use learning analytics and data from online math curriculum to plan for each class period where students move between the three lab rotation pods.
  3. Scaffold students proficiency with integrated math content weaving in opportunities for project based learning as appropriate.
  4. Design learning opportunities that focus on finding collaborative solutions to real-world problems; there is much to learn on the journey to the solution.
  1. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establishing consistent behavioral norms

  1. Establish both class wide and individual behavior goals with students and hold students accountable to uphold agreed upon goals.
  2. Invest heavily in developing routines (such as checking in with the teacher at the beginning of the class for pod assignment) and skills (such as note-taking) that will continue to pay off throughout the student’s academic career and across disciplines.
  3. Strategic assignment of small work groups, seating charts, and thoughtful room design that supports multiple learning modes. The blended learning math room will be a larger section of students than other classes at the school due to its technology enhanced format.
  4. Deescalate student behavior challenges with respect and integrity with as little class disruption as possible leveraging the Sanctuary model.
  5. Help students develop a sense of their own strengths and weaknesses and then translate them into effective group roles. Group role selection and dynamics are facilitated by the teachers initially but eventually opened up to student selection and discretion.
  6. Partnership with the student engagement team and families on behavioral goal setting.
  7. Ongoing goal progress is documented in learning hub progress notes.

4.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Team Teaching and Collaboration

  1. Co-design and facilitate an appropriate progression and activities in the blended learning math software that scaffold learning.
  2. Establish daily collaboration with the math co-teacher through planning time.
  3. Source, select and find case studies and current events connected to units of study that make learning math authentic.
  4. Be aware of positioning in the classroom with the co-teacher and teaching assistant and adjust to ensure that the whole room is covered and all students are productively engaged and getting the assistance they need. Develop an exit slip program to keep students accountable for learning.
  5. Co-teaches will either take responsibility for small groups of students or circulate around the room responding to students as they request assistance and seeking out students who need assistance, but are less likely to speak up.
  6. Takes an active and constructive role in faculty meetings and in-service programs.
  7. Communicates openly and effectively with colleagues.

5.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assessment Design

  1. Use both formative assessment and summative assessment in the teaching of mathematics. Students should be encouraged to “re-take” exams as needed that emphasize the value in revision and working towards understanding.
  2. Support and assess collaborative peer-learning that is a part of the lab rotation model
  3. Set reasonable goals for covering mathematics content and hold students accountable for meeting goals.
  4. Mentor a team of students participating in the Pittsburgh Data Jam competition taking place in the spring of each year.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Use of Technology

  1. Actively explore new technologies to support active learning during class time that differentiate and personalize learning especially when direct-instruction is taking place.
  1. Support students in using Tableau, SPSS and other math visualization tools.
  1. Re-use materials to enhance math learning, as appropriate, on the web through sources like Khan Academy and TED-ED.
  1. Maintain a class website through the learning management system.
  1. With support and training, teachers will use technology generated data, otherwise known as "learning analytics" to personalize and differentiate instruction.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Learning Hub

  1. Models an attitude of service.
  1. Act as a learning coach to a group of students in the learning hub advisory program.
  1. Support students in developing their personalized learning plan.
  1. Mentor students in selecting projects for the Genius Hour program.
  1. Support student clubs by acting as faculty advisor.
  1. Values the primary educational role of parents.
  1. Cooperates with parents in the best interest of the students.
  1. Provide quarterly narrative input to track student growth related to HFA core skill competencies required for all graduates.

Reporting Relationship: Principal

Minimum Qualifications:

A degree in math and 2 years of teaching experience are required. Some background in blended learning and team-teaching is preferred. Desirable candidates will have a demonstrated enthusiasm for working with and teaching adolescents, a strong sense of school community and teamwork, excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and knowledge of educational technologies. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience teaching in multiple fields of mathematics. This person will demonstrate a commitment to bringing out the absolute best in each student, innovative teaching practices and open collaboration with colleagues. Faculty members must support the goals of Catholic education and the mission of Holy Family Academy. All candidates must have current Act 33, 34 and education FBI clearances.
