Details Specific to the Post

Background and Context

The Information and Communication Technology Department (ICTD) is based on the Hull campus of the University within the Applied Science building.

The purpose of ICTD is to support, improve and transform the way ICT is used across the University of Hull. The University ICT Strategy has 8 key objectives and the ICTD is working in partnership with the rest of the University to:

•Significantly improve the University ICT infrastructure as part of the ICT Transformation Programme.

•Upgrade or replace key University software systems through a focussed core systems refresh within the ICT Transformation Programme.

•Monitor and maximise benefits delivered from the upgraded infrastructure and core systems programmes.

•Develop and implement a University of Hull ICT governance model.

•Provide clearly defined support for research.

•Improve support of teaching and learning and the audio-visual development programme.

•Improve and articulate service quality.

•Improve the student experience.

The University has developed an Information Systems and Technology Transformation Roadmap that has been approved by the University Executive Group. The majority of the University’s information systems are being replaced, with concurrent review and standardisation of business processes. The ICT Department is providing a systems integration, data warehousing, and Management Information & Business Intelligence service alongside these Information Systems projects and requires an Analyst/Developer, reporting to the MI/BI Service Manager.

The post holder will have an important role in provision of a Management Information and Business Intelligence service to the University.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

The primary purpose of the role is the analysis, design, implementation, testing, documenting and maintenance of new and amended management information assets. These activities will be carried out using a variety of Software Development methodologies appropriate to the task, but likely including Waterfall and Agile methodologies. The intricacies of certain methods will vary depending upon the system and software development methodology.

The University’s current development approach is to use the Microsoft BI stack. This may change in the future and depending upon business case other tools may be employed.

The main objectives of the post are to:

Successfully complete training and pass examination to obtainMicrosoft Certified Solutions Associate (MSCA) level qualification.

  • Assist in team based IT Systems development and be involved in pre- and post-implementation phases of IT Systems Development including: maintenance and release processes, software configuration, change and release management and production support; Adhere to good software programming practices and standards to ensure the IT System’s maintenance is efficient, especially in a team development environment;
  • Assist in the operation, maintenance and management of software tools used to support efficient and effective software development, including Source Code and build management tools, software test management tools, requirements engineering and solution documentation tools.
  • Work with internal ICT specialists to assist in determining optimal data models from which analysis and reporting can be carried out.
  • Assist in the design, development and maintenance of reporting and analysis data marts
  • Assist with the resolution of data quality issues.
  • Assist in the design, development and maintenance of the University Data Warehouse.
  • Assist in the develop methods within the data warehouse that provide the ability to combine disparate datasets for the purpose of analysis, including, but not limited to; Student Information System, HR System, Virtual Learning System, Student Engagement System, Student Accommodation System and Finance System.
  • Create documentation and user guides for management information and business intelligence solutions.

Overall Purpose of the Role

The role holder:

•Assist MI/BI Team with IT support, directly or indirectly, to faculty and/or department and students as appropriate to their level of development and understanding.

•Will work towards gaining the professional qualification Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MSCA).

•Will use skills learnt through formal training and hands of practical experience to influence decisions or events by working collaboratively internally and externally to the University.

•Will evaluate and analyse information and use initiative and creativity to solve non-standard problems.

Main Work Activities Communication

•Explains IT procedures, technical processes, equipment and software operation to students, staff and visitors.

•Gives advice and guidance to staff and students on various IT related topics.

•Presents information to staff and colleagues through PowerPoint presentations and/or practical demonstration.

•Creates technical instructions and user guides.

Teamwork and Motivation

•Provides day-to-day support to other members of staff and members of staff new to the work area.

•Provides advice and guidance to the team pertaining to new initiatives/services and processes and procedures.

Service Delivery

  • Provides IT, computing and network and AV support to staff and students.
  • Install, configure, maintain and support applications and systems software and associated peripheral equipment.

Planning and Organisation

  • Plans and prioritises own work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Checks and monitors equipment is in good working order and produce schedules to manage this.

Analysis/Reporting

  • Fault diagnosis, test and maintain equipment
  • Keep up to date with latest developments/software/equipment

  • Network traffic logs

Teaching and Learning Support

  • May be required to instruct students and staff on the use or configuration of a range of software and IT/AV equipment.

Additionally the post holder will be required to:

May be required to undertake specific health and safety roles on request e.g. Display screen equipment assessor, departmental safety officer, fire warden
