Job Title: Mail and Security Operative

Job Purpose:- To contribute to the provision of an efficient and effective University-wide Security and Mail Service through involvement, crime prevention, patrols, emergency response, Mail Room duties general security duties.

Responsible to: - Security Team Leader

1.  Key Responsibilities

·  Despatch large volumes of mail, parcels and other items including franking, weighing, costing, recording and completion of documentation.

·  Select appropriate despatch methods and meet despatch deadlines.

·  Use online services to record mailings and track deliveries.

·  Sort internal and external mail accurately and quickly within a given timescale

·  Take responsibility for University mail and associated equipment

·  Assist with delivery and collection of mail to offices and other designated delivery points within the University according to a timed route, when required

·  Manual Handling including the lifting and transporting of University goods as required

·  Provide counter services for staff and student out going private mail.

·  Deliver University reprographics and library books.

·  Carry out general patrols and incident/emergency response.

·  Identify, assess and respond appropriately to crime prevention issues.

·  Provide advice to victims of potential victims of crime, including reporting of issues/defects which affect the safety and security of people and property.

·  Conduct foot and mobile patrols to ensure good order on the Campus and prevent crime, vandalism/damage to property and breaches of the peace including:

o  Surveillance activity including the use of CCTV

o  Building checks

o  Open and secure buildings

·  Undertake general duties to ensure an exceptional student experience, for instance, the removal of graffiti, out of hours grounds maintenance and cleaning, responding to Halls of Residences calls (e.g. lock out, re-setting trip switches, flood), assisting visitors and guests with luggage.

·  Assist with fire alarm activations as briefed.

·  Carry out planned maintenance inspections and testing including, but not limited to, fire detection and fire fighting installations and equipment.

·  Carry out escort duties including cash and valuables.

·  Provide reports, statements and other records and, where required, give evidence in court or in internal hearings, in connection with the role.

·  Carry out routine tasks necessary to ensure the general health, safety, wellbeing and conduct of students, staff and visitors, including making safe hazards and snow and ice clearance.

·  Carry out marshalling, crowd control and security duties in connection with events and activities.

·  Ensure that all buildings are secure at all times including the setting of security alarms, monitoring security systems. Conducting foot and mobile patrols in order to prevent crime, vandalism/damage to property, breaches of the peace and anti-social behaviour.

·  To be a member of the University Fire Response Team (FRT) and assist in the co-ordination of emergency services and the response to emergency situations. Carry out all duties associated with this task including the use of Evacuation Chairs and lifts, assisting people with accessibility issues from buildings and ascend stairs when lifts are not in use to investigate nature of emergency.

·  Car parking and traffic control within the University including the application of car parking regulations. Ensuring the access of emergency and other essential service vehicles at all times.

·  Undertake minor maintenance repairs in line with provided training, capability and competence.

·  Use of Information Technology and various computing packages, including the Security database

·  Carrying out general administrative tasks

·  Reception duties

·  First Aid duties including the use of Epipens and Defibrillators

·  Assisting out of hours guest and visitors with their luggage.

·  Assisting out of hours disabled students, residents or visitors

2. Location:-

Normal operations are conducted from control rooms at the City and Coach Lane Campuses. Staff may be required to carry out duties at those sites and any other properties or partners sites as required by the University

3. Attendance Requirements:

-  Full Time, 37 hours. The post holder will normally work 37 hours per week, to work any 5 over 7 days between the hours of 0700-1900.
