Job Title:Horizons Project Officer

Department:Central

Reports to:Horizons Project Co-ordinator

Location:Croydon, Lambeth and other Boroughs as required

Overall Aim

Support the delivery of organisational Volunteering Strategy

Develop and promote Horizons mentoring project.

Recruit, interview and vet mentors from across London.

Support the mentor induction programme for all new mentors.

Develop key relationships with schools and youth services across Lambeth and Croydon in order to recruit mentees.

Provide on-going placement support to mentors and mentees.

Develop and deliver the mentee engagement events in Lambeth and Croydon

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment and retention of mentees.

Recruitment and support of mentors.

Processing all applications and monitoring paperwork; create robust systems to enable tight management of the project.Manage database of mentees/ mentors.

Work with colleagues from Horizons and the Community and Central Services team to embed the work of Horizons within SLYMCA and develop new projects.

Recruitment

Support the mentor induction programme for all new mentors

Promote and advertise mentoring opportunity across London, including use of social media.

Interview, obtain DBS checks and process mentor applications.

Develop and maintain working partnerships with voluntary organisations, volunteer recruitment centres, websites and charities to promote Horizons Mentoring Project opportunities to the wider community

Run and attend promotional events to raise the project’s profile.

On-going Mentor/ Mentee Support

Organise events that reward or recognise mentors for their contribution to the project, for their commitment to the mentoring and ensure that mentors feel valued and thanked.

Organise events for young people that celebrate their commitment to the mentoring process, provide fun activities to keep them engaged, and provide new opportunities to be stretched and developed.

Assist in support for mentors to meet their peers, discuss good practice and have additional learning sessions built in.

Provide ongoing telephone and email support for mentors, mentees and their parents as the project progresses.

General

To act in accordance with the aims of South London YMCA and promote and implement SLYMCA’s Equal Opportunities Policy and other polices adopted by the Board.

To carry out any other duties as directed by the Chief Executive or other senior staff.

Experience & qualifications

  • Experience of supporting vulnerable young people and children.
  • Experience of supporting volunteers.

Knowledge /
  • An understanding of the reasons why children and young people become socially excluded.

  • Knowledge of good practice in recruiting, supporting and retaining volunteers.

Skills /
  • Ability to organise events and volunteer recruitment processes.

  • Ability to maintain good written records of work and evidence outcomes achieved.

  • Ability to be approachable, accessible and professional to a range of stakeholders.

  • Ability to manage your own time and plan your workload to meet deadlines and commitments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and verbally and in writing, demonstrating a good standard of written and oral English.

  • Computer literate with competency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond proactively to change.
