JOB PROFILE: Operating al Jazeera’s London MCR, will be responsible for the acquisition of live news via Satellite, Fibre, FTP and Quicklink. Will actively manage the loading of multiple traffic strands on the AJE fibre network and will ensure the operational stability for the delivery of both program output and news/programmes delivery of media. Must be capable of working in a highly pressurized 24 hour news environment in MCR. An in-depth knowledge of satellite and optical fibre communication technology and broadcast standards is essential, including HDTV and file based video formats.
KEY COMPETENCIES:
- Comprehensive understanding of a live 24 hour news environment.
- An in depth knowledge of satellite and optical fibre communication technology and also broadcast standards including. HD 1080i SDI, AES/EBU, MPEG, PAL 625, NTSC 525, DVBS, DVBS2.
- Understanding of file based video formats, including transcoding and compression of.
- Understanding of IP networks (TCP/IP, FTP, Store and Forward).
- Fluent English speaker and able to communicate effectively.
- Able to deal with competing demands, and remain calm under pressure.
- Commitment to solve problems quickly and effectively.
- To be able to translate user requirements into technical requirements and technical specifications.
- Recognize early signs of difficulty and delay, and not hesitate in communicating them to Operational, Editorial and Management teams.
- A high level of interpersonal skills.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure the monitoring and adjustment of incoming video streams according to the AJE Broadcasting Technical Standards.
- Coordination with operators in the field to support remote operations via satellite, fibre, FTP, IP, and Inmarsat networks.
- Ensuring the smooth flow of media through Program edit suits.
- Provide operational and engineering support to other technical areas within the broadcast centre, including the Program department’s AVID and FCP edit suits.
- Undertake routine testing, and coordinate preventative and corrective maintenance of backup transmission systems and ancillary equipment.
- Ensure reporting of technical issues to the relevant departments or suppliers.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL REQUIRED:
- A minimum of 5 years experience working in MCR in a television news environment.
- Experience in a server-based news environment.
- Fluent English language – written and oral.
