Safety Specialist

The primary duties of this position are to serve in a contractor position as a Safety Specialist at a federal medical center. The candidate should be willing to work in an office or in the field. Must have the ability to plan and execute tasks, organize and coordinate work assignments. Position is entry level to 5 years experience.

Major responsibilities of this position may include the following:

  • Measurement of Waste Anesthesia Gases in Operating Rooms for nitrous oxide and halogen agents.
  • Ventilation measurement of general room ventilation, pitot tube traverses, face velocity, IAQ and other such as negative pressure in isolation rooms.
  • Assist with Respiratory Protection Program including but not limited to fit testing, review and update of memo, determine use requirements, and spot check (inspecting) for program compliance.
  • Assist with HAZCOM program including but not limited to conducting training, review and update of HAZCOM program document, updating MSDS books, establishing spill prevention and control plans, and updating PPE requirements
  • Assist in other tasks as required including but not limited to fire extinguisher inspections, fire drill monitoring, general safety training, exposure monitoring, RMW monitoring, chemical inventories, and complete associated reports.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and/or federal permitting regulations
  • Assist in organizing data and preparing charts and graphs
  • Practical experience of computer software and databases
  • Perform other duties as required

Minimum Requirements for this position include:

  • Candidate should have an Associates Degree in safety, science, or related field.
  • Training is provided for inspection techniques and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Criteria/Conditions (specific background and skills):

  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment maybe required including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, respirator, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Little overnight travel is anticipated
  • Promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing.
