MUSTEK A3 USB SCANEXPRESS

After days and days of trying to get this scanner to work I’ve found the instructions below to work everytime. I hope this works and saves you countless hours of trouble getting this scanner to work.

Preparing Windows for the Scanner:

1)  Go to the start menu, all programs, and uninstall ScanExpress.

2)  Next go to the “C” Drive and open the “Windows” folder. If you see a folder that says “Twain_32” then delete the Twain_32 folder.

3)  Next go to the “C” Drive and open the “Program Files” folder. If you see the “ScanExpress” folder then delete it.

4)  You are now ready to begin installation.

Installation:

1)  To install, do not use the CD provided with the scanner. It doesn’t work.

2)  Go to http://mustek.com/mustek/Support.php

3)  With the drop down menus select the type of Mustek scanner you have. If you have the one you saw in my blog, Select:

a)  Category: “Scanner”

b)  Series: “USB Port”

c)  Model: “A3 USB”

4)  Download all of the files for your operating system DIRECTLY to the desktop. Do NOT put them in a folder or save them to your hard drive. Click on each one and SAVE each one to the desktop. Also, do not rename any of them. It’s very important that you just click on each file, click to save it, and make sure you don’t change or input a name for the file.

5)  Once all of the files are downloaded, click on “Web.exe” file on your desktop to begin installation.

6)  Restart the computer when finished. Make sure to plug in your scanner as it restarts.

Getting the scanner to work:

1)  Getting the scanner to work is the tricky part. Here’s what I’ve found to work so far.

2)  Plug the scanner into the USB port.

3)  Go to start, and under the ScanExpress folder you’ll see a folder called “Direct Scan”. Click on this.

4)  You should see the “Direct Scan” appear in the lower right corner of your taskbar. If there is an “X” over the icon, then you need to unplug your scanner and plug it back in. If the icon has little sleepy “Zzzzz” then everything should be fine. You want to see the “Zzzzz”.

5)  Open up the program you plan to use for scanning. I use Adobe Photoshop. I open Photoshop, go to File, and Import. Under Import you’ll see A3 USB ScanExpress.

Problems:

1)  If the driver is not installing correctly you may have to repeat the uninstall and install procedures.

2)  Sometimes the problem with installation is because the downloaded files were not saved to the desktop or their files names were altered.

3)  If the driver installs but you keep getting a “Twain Source” error. Just make sure the “Direct Scan” is in the task bar and has the “Zzzz”. This is why the Twain Source error comes up many times.
