Job Title: Electrical Technician

Faculty: Electrical and Electronic Engineering PEMC Group Research support

Salary: £22,249 to £26,537 per annum, depending on skills & experience (salary can progress to £31,656 per annum subject to performance)

Job Family and Level: Technical Services, Level 3

Contract Status: Available immediately until 9 July 2017

Hours of Work: 36.25 (full-time)

Location: Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Tower Building, Aerospace Technology Centre and Energies Technology Building.

Reporting to: Colin Blackburn (Senior Electrical Technical)

Purpose of the New Role:

Overall the functions of the Electrical technician role are to support the PEMC group research projects ensuring that timescales, deliverables and safety are not compromised.

This will involve the installation of both single Phase and three Phase supplies within the groups laboratories and the assembly and testing of bespoke control drives to deliver highly specialised electrical installations to aid research.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Electrical installations
To assist through close interaction with researchers, academics and the specialist electrical team in the installation of a wide range of electrical systems including LV AC/DC and high power installations, all complying with BS7671 standards. / 30%
2. / Construction and modifications of a wide range of electrical equipment, including motor drive systems. This will entail specification, pricing and purchasing of appropriate components. / 20%
3. / Testing and inspection of electrical installations and equipment to meet health and safety directives. / 15%
4. / Construction of individually designed electrical control panels and devices for research development. / 15%
5. / Offer technical advice to both academics and researchers in relation to the safe operation of the group’s electrical research rigs. / 10%
6. / Maintenance, security and general good housekeeping of the electrical workshop and associated laboratories. / 5%
7. / Any other duties appropriate to the grade and post holder. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / HNC or equivalent, plus substantial work experience in a relevant role.
OR
Substantial work experience in a relevant role.
Full electrical Apprenticeship
17th Edition Requirements for Electrical Installations. / Mechanical engineering skills.
2394 + 2395 Inspection, Testing and Certification
Skills/Training / The planning and execution of electrical installations in a laboratory or Industrial environment.
Competent in both single and three phase installations.
The interpretation and implementation of work related regulations and procedures and an understanding of the implications of non-compliance on other staff and the University (e.g. Health and Safety).
Ability to communicate clearly to non-specialist and senior level audiences. / Electrical knowledge of Motors.
Knowledge of High Power electronic devices and assemblies.
Skills in the installation and programming of PLC’s
Knowledge of PV and renewable installs
Full Driving license
Manual handling and overhead crane training.
Relevant IT skills.
Experience / Substantial proven experience in an electrical engineering background / Experience of working in a specialist research facility
Statutory/Legal / Understanding of Health & Safety regulations and procedures

Decision Making

i) Taken independently by the role holder

Construction and testing of electrical installations.
Prioritising own workload within the electrical technical team to ensure timescales are met.
Sourcing of appropriate materials and components.
Certification of Electrical experiment rigs and installations.
Compliance with Health and safety guidelines.

ii) Taken in collaboration with others

General good housekeeping of the laboratories and Workshop.

iii) Referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder
