Occupational Summary: The Director of Finance/Controller provides daily leadership and management of the Accounting Department, whose duties include including internal controls, cash management, accounting and financial reporting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, student loans, and cashiering. In addition, the Director of Finance develops standards and sets expectations within the department for excellent internal and external customer service, and effective business processes that ensure transactions are recorded and reported in a timely and accurately manner. The position reports directly to, and works closely with, the Vice President for Finance and Planning/Treasurer and must be able to think global by looking at the College from an overall perspective seeing the big picture and act local by developing and implementing customized solutions that are responsive, relevant and related to overall business and strategic priorities of the College.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Takes full ownership for the General Ledger in order to close books on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis within specified and non-negotiable deadlines. Ensures there is a robust and clearly defined close process for all balance sheet and income statement accounts.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements and management reports, related reports and analysis; prepare ad hoc financial as necessary or requested.
- Oversees fiscal transactions of gifts, grants and contracts from federal and private sources; provides reporting as required on disbursement or use of funds.
- Administers student loan funds in collaboration with student financial services staff.
- Plan and coordinate the annual external audit of the College's financial statements and the A-133 compliance audit.
- Prepare the College's Form 990 and other regulatory and compliance reports and ensure accurate and timely completion of filings.
- Manage College’s cash and investment treasury function.
- In conjunction with the Vice President for Finance & Planning/Treasurer, participate in the College's annual and multi-year budgeting process; monitor progress during development cycle to ensure accuracy, completeness and timely completion.
- Ensures the appropriate internal controls are in place in regards to the close process, inputs and outputs of the general ledger and overall integrity, completeness and accuracy of the general ledger.
- Provideexpertise and guidanceto administratorsconcerningbudget, accountingand financial matters.
- Maintain theintegrated financial accountingand reportingsystem(s).
- Review and/or develop fiscal policies, procedures and best practices.Recommend changes that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of fiscal practices and provide superior customer service to users.
- Exercise full supervisory authority to manage, train, mentor and evaluate staff.Confer regularly with staff to plan, coordinate and evaluate activities/projects, and assign/review work.Ensure staff are cross-trained and processes are documented.
- Performs othersimilarlyrelated duties asassignedor required.
Credentials and Experience:
1.Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in accounting or finance,and Master’s degree or CPA required.
2.Minimum fiveyears ofexperiencegeneral ledger accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting. Experience with fund or non-profit accounting is strongly preferred.
3.Experience with cash and investmentmanagement, forecasting, and reconciling.
4.Prior supervisory experience and management responsibility required.
5.Experience with automated financial managementand reportingsystems.
