JOB TITLE: Communications Officer (Young Redwings and Communications Support)

ACCOUNTABLE TO:Press and Communications Manager

(The Press and Communications Manager reports to the Head of Communications)

HOURS OF WORK:Full-time(37.5 hours per week)

BASED AT:Hapton, Norfolk

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT:Permanent

JOB PURPOSE

To develop effective and engaging communications with and to inspire young supporters of Redwings. To take particular responsibility for the Young Redwings and Mini Reds clubs, including the twice-yearly Young Redwingsand Mini Reds magazines and their digital aspects.

To provide essential communications and design support to the department in order to promote Redwings’ fundraising campaigns, education work, press and social media strategy, and rehoming programme.

To deal with a variety of enquiries from young supporters.

To provide design support where appropriate.

To provide additional copy-writing and proof reading support for Redwings’ publications.

To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required to assist the Press and Communications Manager, Head of Communications or Chief Executive.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY AND TASKS:

Young Redwings and Mini Reds

1.Under the supervision of the Press and Communications Manager, to research and compile two Young Redwingsand two Mini Redsmagazines each year with a view to promoting adoptions, encouraging footfall to visitor centres, and inspiring young fundraisers and good practice in horse care and welfare.

2. Be instrumental in the development of the new Young Redwings and Mini Reds websites, researching design concepts, interactivity and user journey, and curating all content.

3. To maintain and compose bespokecontent for the Young Redwings and Mini Reds websites, writing monthly articles, curating image and video content and adapting education materials into downloadable resources and/or interactive activities.

4.Engage Redwings’ young supporter base through encouraging interaction with Young Redwings and Mini Reds publications (that is, through letters, poems, projects and drawings), as well as attending and being involved in activities at the visitor centres.

5. Raise awareness of Redwings’ work, proper horse care and consideration to welfare through the publications and digital elements of the Young Redwings and Mini Reds clubs.

6. Responding to Young Redwings enquiries via the “Ask Red” feature of the website and answering letters and emails from young supporters.

7. To work with the Press and Communications Manager on the future development of the Young Redwings and Mini Reds club, magazine and website.

Press and social media

8.Working as a member of the editorial team to provide additional publication support; that is, contributing copy to the gift catalogue, Annual Review, Newsletters, eNewsletters, Fundraising appeals, Guardian Times, and educational literature.

9.As well as being responsible for photography for Young Redwings and Mini Reds publications and websites, to photograph scenes from the Sanctuary to be used across all Redwings publications

10.Writing press releases to target publications relevant to young supporters, as well as news stories for the main Redwings website.

11. Investigating social media avenues for engaging young supporters.

12.Taking responsibility for Redwings Tucker’s Twitter account – devising a strategy for engaging supporters and communicating key education and fundraising messages.

Communications and design support

8.To provide essential communications support across the department to promote the visitor centres, education and campaigns work, press work, social media, fundraising and rehoming.

9.To assist with the editing of photographs for the website.

10.To assist with the editing and resizing of advert artwork for publications.

11.To assist with the layout and design of in-house promotional materials (visitor centre activity sheets, posters and flyers, paddock boards), events literature (data capture sheets, rescue story flip charts) and newsletters (Guardian Times, Volunteers Round-Up).

Other

12.Operate as a key member of the external events team, attending and assisting the coordination of exhibitions, conferences and shows.

13.Assisting with in-house Redwings events (Hapton Open Weekend, Redwings Show) – providing children’s activities and material such as quizzes when required.

14. To positively embrace any future duties that fall within the role.

The post also carries governance and statutory responsibilities:

GENERAL NOTES

All staff must be sympathetic to and able to project the philosophy and concept of equine welfare; working for a charity, and Redwings values.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is very much a community and all members of staff are encouraged to be part of its day to day life.
