JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: COMMUNICATIONS & CHALLENGE EVENTS OFFICER

BASED:The Old Police House/The LookOut in Hyde Park, London W2 2UH

SALARY:£26,754 - £29,000 per annum, depending on experience

TERMS: Permanent contract on a full time basis. 26 days annual leave pro rata plus Public Holidays. A pension scheme is available.

REPORTING TO:Senior Marketing & Communications Manager

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:Head of Major Events, Digital Marketing and Communications Manager, Education Manager and Community Engagement Officer

LIAISON WITH: You will be a key member of the core marketing and communicationsteams, working closely with the Senior Marketing and Communications Manager and Digital Marketing and Communications Manager. You will also work with teams across the charity including the Development and Learning Directorate and the Communications, Commercial and Events Directorate.

Key relationships will be with Head of Major Events, Education Manager and Community Programme Officer. You will also liaise with external suppliers and engage with the general public.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Royal Parks is a new charity that was set up in March 2017 to manage and fundraise for The Royal Parks. A dynamic, social media savvy and hard-working self-starter, the Marketing & Challenge Events Officer will take the lead on the following campaigns:

  1. Team Squirrel – recruiting a team of runners to take part and fundraise for us in challenge events such as the Royal Parks Half Marathon and Virgin Money London Marathon plus a growing portfolio of additional events.
  2. Schools and Community Learning Programmes marketing - led by the Learning team based at The LookOut, Hyde Park.

You will also work closely with both the Senior Marketing & Communications Manager and the Digital Marketing & Communications Manager, providing day to day support where necessary.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:

  • Lead on Team Squirrel,managing the runner journey from recruitment, engagement and training, to race day and beyond, maximising fundraising for The Royal Parks.
  • Lead on Schools andCommunity Learning Programmes marketing: manage and deliver marketing and communications to support the annual plan of events and activities for children, families, adults, schools, teachers and community groups at The LookOut, Hyde Park.
  • General Marketing & Comms support: provide ad hoc support to help the wider team including: producing marketing collateral, digital marketing (including social media), events listings and media coverage.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Squirrel

  • Review current Team Squirrel Strategy (2015-18) to implement plans as required and devise new strategy for 2019-2022 with the Head of Major Events
  • Work with Head of Major Events to set annual targets for runner numbers, fundraising targets and annual budget, and manage these independently
  • Promote Team Squirrel places in challenge events including the award winning Royal Parks Half Marathon, Virgin Money London Marathon and a growing portfolio of additional events. Recruit runners with a multi-channel marketing campaign through The Royal Parks website, email marketing, social media and other external media platforms
  • Engage, inform and motivate runners from recruitment to race day and beyond, via regular email and telephone communications, training opportunities and events, to achieve their fundraising goals
  • Build strong relationships with other charities to share best practice

Community and Schools Programme

  • Plan and deliver all marketing and communications to help promote and raise awareness of community learning events and activities in Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens
  • Plan and deliver all communications for the Schools Programme, to help promote and raise awareness of schools sessions, school outreach, CPD for teachers and ad hoc projects across Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens
  • Produce all marketing materials, write copy and publish content for the Learn section and related Events section on The Royal Parks website, email marketing, printed collateral and social media
  • Liaise with the press and other media, drafting press releases and developing relationships with key media contacts as required
  • Research marketing channels to reach new audiences
  • Work with the Education team, providing advice and support to increase engagement and reach out to new audiences
  • Work with Head of Learning to set the annual budget and manage this independently

General Marketing & Comms

  • Support the team to keep the Marketing & Comms plan on track
  • Help the Senior Marketing & Comms Manager generate and respond to media enquiries
  • Monitor and record all communication and marketing materials produced in house, keeping archives and databases up to date
  • Monitor and record press cuttings related to team’s activities and maintain media contacts database

Digital Communications

  • Work with the Digital Marketing and Communications Manager to expand, improve and monitor our digital marketing activities, including our website, social media, email campaigns and the production of digital content

Other

  • Contribute to School and Community Engagement events as and when required
  • Work on other duties may be reasonably required from time to time

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications

  • Graduate, ideally in a relevant or a similar discipline.

Experience

  • Proven experience in marketing and communications and challenge events.

  • Experience in a customer facing role, engaging and liaising with visitors, participants, audiences and or volunteers.

  • Experience working or volunteering in charities and or social enterprises from the heritage, wildlife, conservation and wellbeing sectors.

Skills

  • Outstanding written / verbal communication skills and a confident phone manner.

  • Good understanding of communications and marketing functions.

  • Excellent copy writing skills for print and digital platforms, with the ability to adapt to a wide range of audiences.

  • Excellent IT skills, including operational use of the Microsoft Office suite, databases, CMS, internet, email marketing systems and social media channels.

  • Strong planning and prioritising skills with the ability to multitask and manage several outputs simultaneously with a keen eye for detail.
