Purpose of the role:

The purpose of this role will be to lead and deliver individual and collaborative research and teaching in the area of social work, and make a contribution to the direction of research and teaching programmes in the School of Sociology and Social Policy.

The post holder will develop new concepts and ideas and will be expected, where appropriate, to develop and win support for innovative research and/ or teaching development proposals and funding bids.

The post holder will make a significant contribution to their academic unit via leadership and/ or administrative management and/ or co-ordination of specific initiatives.

Main Responsibilities

1 / Provide high quality teaching on, and contribute to the ongoing development of, the BA in Social Work and MA in Social Work
2 / Plan, deliver and assess high-quality taught modules to undergraduate and postgraduate social work students
3 / Provide high-quality dissertation supervision at postgraduate level and co-supervise PhD students
4 / Contribute to the development of e-learning strategies and practice
5 / Provide personal tutoring for students, including visiting them whilst on placement
6 / Be responsible for and comply with The University of Nottingham Teaching Quality assurance standards and procedures. Ensure teaching quality assessment and assessment of progress and other information is maintained and supplied to the University as required
7 / Address student issues of professional development and competency
8 / Contribute to the development of links with employers
9 / Maintain the currency of teaching material and content through engagement with practitioners and research in relevant subject areas
10 / Develop proposals and generate external funding for research, either independently or in collaboration with colleagues.
11 / Publish in national and international refereed research outlets and write and contribute to books
12 / Actively contribute to the maintenance and development of the School’s research environment.
13 / Make a significant contribution to the success of the School, including by successfully undertaking an administrative role and/or the administrative management of specific initiatives

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/
Education / Qualified social worker or substantial experience in a social care role
Undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area / PhD or PhD near to completion
30 credits of a UK Postgraduate Teaching Certificate or Education-related Masters, or equivalent
Higher Education Academy Associate or Fellow status or equivalent nationally recognised status for HE teaching from another country
Knowledge/ Skills/Training / Extensive knowledge of the theory and practice of social work
Excellent skills in:
  • presentation, verbal and written communication;
  • time-management and organisation
Ability to contribute to the planning, design and development of taught programmes relevant to social work
Ability to develop and design teaching materials
Ability to develop and deliver teaching in one or more of the following areas:
  • Adult mental health
  • Child and adult safeguarding
  • Human growth and development
  • Social work theories, models and methods
  • Research methods for social work practice
Ability to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students through individual and group tutorials and visiting their practice placements.
Ability to supervise MA dissertations

School of Sociology and Social Policy

We are a multidisciplinary unit comprised of 33 research active teaching staff and 13 administrative staff. The School is led by the Head of School, Professor Bruce Stafford and the School Executive Group, supported by a series of administrative teams, including Undergraduate, Graduate and Research teams. RegularSchool Meetings, attended by all staff, play a central role in ensuring a collegial approach to the development of policy and practice within the School.

The School currently teaches 492 undergraduate students on single honours undergraduate programmes in Sociology, Cultural Sociology and Social Policy and joint honours programmes in Sociology and Social Policy, Social Work and Social Policy and Film and Television Studies and Cultural Sociology. 182 students are registered for postgraduate taught programmes in Research Methods (ESRC recognised), Global Citizenship, Identities and Human Rights, International Social Policy, Social Work, Public Policy and Public Administration. The University is recognised as an ESRC Doctoral Training Centre and the School plays a central role in the provision of research methods training.

The Centre for Social Work (CSW)

Social work education has been delivered in the Centre for Social Work at the University of Nottingham for over 60 years.The CSW views the role of the social work profession as being to promote social and personal change and problem-solving in human relationships and communities and all our teaching and research activities support this philosophy. We are a dynamic, influential centre with involvement nationally and internationally in the development of social work education and research. We have excellent working partnerships with local employers, and our teaching is highly rated by our students. Our research covers a range of social work themes including adult and child protection, prevention and early intervention, disability and innovative practice models. We support a growing student PhD community and we have a strong track record of research grant capture. We offer a supportive, collegiate environment with numerous opportunities for joint working with staff in the Centre and in the School.

Our eight academic staff, supported by three administrators, deliver a three-year, qualifying undergraduate BA Social Work and a two-year postgraduate MA Social Work. Our approach includes social work practitioners in teaching students and the involvement of service users. We work closely with our local partner agencies to ensure our students get the best possible learning experience on placement as well as in the classroom.
