Hours of Work:Full time: 36.25 hours per week. This post is open to job share.

Purpose of the New Role:The successful candidate will make a significant contribution to teaching and research within the School and contribute to centrallyprovided Quantitative Research Methodstraining across the Faculty of Social Science (Q-Step affiliated)

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Teaching, Learning and Support
The role holder will be expected to play a central role in the Faculty-wide provision of Quantitative Research Methods across the social sciences (in the context of the Q-Step Affiliate Status initiative). Additionally, the role holder will be expected to contribute to teaching at all levels within the School of Geography, from Year 1 to Year 4, as required, including undertaking personal tutorials at UG and PG levels. The role holder may be required to attend the Year 1 Field class in the Lake District during the Easter vacation.
The role will including setting of assessments and examinations, preparation, teaching, marking, tutorial support, feedback and associated administration and outreach activities.
Continuously evaluating teaching content, delivery methods and assessment methods and making improvements. / 30%
2. / Research
The role holder will undertake a successful research programme within the School of Geography, in line with the overall research strategy.
Devise grant applications to external bodies to fund new research.
Conduct and supervise others conducting original research, resulting in publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer reviewed journals.
Participation inmeetings, conferences and seminars, prepare research presentations and papers to disseminate research findings. / 30%
3. / Supervision
Supervise and assess undergraduate student projects.
Supervise postgraduate students.
Act as a Personal Tutor providing tutorials, assessment and teaching observation.
Pastoral care of students, providing advice and support relating to their studies. / 15%
4. / Administration
To undertake a range of administrative duties, as required, to support the operation of the School and University.
Attending School Committees, teaching groups and relevant School meetings to ensure teaching and programmes are co-ordinated. / 20%
5. / Any other duties appropriate to the post as required by the Head of School. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / PhD (or due to submit) in, or a subject closely, related to Human Geographywith expertise in Geographical Information Science (GIS) and Spatial Databases. / 30 credits of a UK Postgraduate Teaching Certificate or Education-related Masters, or equivalent
Higher Education Academy Fellow status or equivalent nationally recognised status for HE teaching from another country.
Skills/Training / Extensive knowledge of Quantitative Research Methods and their application in the social sciences
Skills in teaching both small and large groups of geography students, at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Ability to convert expertise in spatial databases and spatial analysis into teaching materials covering both theory and practice.
Communication skills for dissemination of research findings (in print and orally).
Internationally recognised researcher, with a developing track record of publications in leading geographical journals.
Ability to work to deadlines and prioritise tasks.
Ability to develop own geographical research area and flexibility to collaborate with colleagues.
Leadership potential. / Teaching experience.
A research monograph or peer reviewed journal articles, published or in press.
Experience / Experience of university teaching and assessment in relevant geographical subjects at HE level.
A track record of publication in leading international journals. / Track record of obtaining external research funding.
A history of trans-disciplinary research.
