Job Summary: To be an active member of the College Leadership Team participating in strategic decision making, thereby enabling the College to fulfill its strategic priorities of the Seven E’s (See Strategic Plan 3.3).

Together with the Assistant Principal for Skills and the Director of Employer Engagement, to provide leadership for, and be accountable for, the development of the FE curriculum, including the quality of delivery and student outcomes. The role also includes the management of the EFA contract.

The College has established a very broad curriculum base of further education and higher education, and with targeted provision servicing the needs of young people, adults, employers, business and the local community. The postholder will take specific responsibility for developing the strategy for young people (14-19 years) in the college vocational and academic programme areas. A major part of the role is building capacity with local partners particularly with the local authority and through other local, regional and national initiatives.

The post holder will be responsible for developing the college’s 14-16 and 14-19 year old curriculum strategies and make a significant contribution to the work of the Bradford College Education Trust (formerly McMillan Education Trust)

The post holder will be responsible for a cluster of curriculum areas, each one lead by a Programme Manager, and will be expected to demonstrate strong performance management to ensure that all students receive a very high quality experience at the college.

The post holder will also lead the FE Quality Improvement and Performance Unit and the work of the 14-19 co-ordinator.

Main Responsibilities:

The Assistant Principal: Young People will be a member of the College’s Leadership Team. Through membership of the Leadership team, the Assistant Principal will make a major contribution to the College’s strategic planning and strategy implementation, primarily in those areas assigned to the postholder’s responsibility. The postholder will also be expected to support all other aspects of College activity.

The Corporation

The Assistant Principal will be required to attend selected committees of the Corporation and present reports as appropriate to these committees. Within the framework laid down by the Corporation, all major operational decisions are taken through the College Executive which meets formally each week.

General Duties and Responsibilities

The postholder will be the Assistant Principal Young People of the College and will be responsible for the following

  • To provide strategic and operational leadership of the 14-19 year old curriculum and teaching and learning
  • To help develop the McMillan Education Trust across the college group
  • To develop the 14-16 year old strategy for the college
  • To motivate staff and students to achieve excellence
  • To be accountable for the delivery of the EFA contract
  • To deploy strong performance management techniques to ensure the curriculum is operating at an Ofsted rating of outstanding or at the very least good.
  • To be accountable for achievement of performance targets in managed curriculum areas in respect of
  • Student recruitment
  • Financial targets
  • Contribution to college surplus
  • Retention, achievement, value added, progression and success rates

  • Leading on and in consultation with the Assistant Principal: Skills and the Director of Employer Engagement setting stretching targets to ensure the SFA contract is fulfilled efficiently and effectively.
  • To exercise leadership in assessing the needs of the 14-19 year old across the college and within the academies and by working with linked managers to initiate curriculum and course development and deliver innovation
  • To develop alternate income streams
  • To lead on self-assessment and improvement planning for the linked curriculum areas and across the young people curriculum
  • To represent and promote the college on a wide range of external bodies and to raise the profile of the College in the community

The postholder will be responsible for the management of:

  • a cluster of Programme Managers

  • stretching quality targets including recruitment, retention, achievement, success and value added
  • networking and liaison with the local authority and schools
  • aspects of employer liaison
  • student satisfaction

The postholder will represent the College externally, local, regionally and nationally with relevant partners.

General Responsibilities

  • To participate as a member of the College Leadership team in evaluating progress with strategic and operational objectives and in forward planning.
  • Liaison with senior colleagues to develop appropriate information reporting formats.
  • To be a member of the Academic Board and appropriate committees as required.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the level of the post that may be required by the College Executive Directorate from time to time.

The post holder will be required to:

  • Undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check for this post.

QUALIFICATIONS & AWARDS

  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification
  • Master’s degree or willingness to undertake the qualification in a reasonable timescale
  • A recognised teaching qualification.
  • Level 2 Literacy or equivalent. (e.g. GCSE A* - C, CSE 1, O Level A – C) or prepared to pass a test prior to interview to demonstrate level 2 ability and then if appointed achieve within an agreed timescale.
  • Level 2 Numeracy or equivalent. Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy or equivalent (e.g. GCSE A* - C, CSE 1, O Level A – C) or prepared to pass a test prior to interview to demonstrate level 2 ability and then if appointed achieve within an agreed timescale.

Main Conditions of Service – Management Spine

Salary

The salary range for the post is indicated in the advertisement and will be confirmed with you at interview. Your salary will be payable monthly, in arrears, by direct credit transfer. Your salary will be reviewed annually in accordance with Corporation policy.

Hours of Work

Your working hours will be a minimum of 35 hours per week to be worked between Monday and Friday. You may, from time to time, be required to work on a Saturday, in which case you will be given time off in lieu during your normal working week.

Pension

You are entitled to participate in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (“TPS”) subject to its terms and conditions from time to time in force. The scheme automatically covers all lecturers who have not elected to opt out of the scheme. Or if the role is none teaching you are entitled to participate in the West Yorkshire Pension Scheme (“WYPS”). Should you choose not to join the pension school TPS, you must participate in the State Pension Scheme or take out a personal pension. Full details of the scheme will be given on appointment.

Holiday Entitlement

In addition to normal Bank and Public holidays, you will be entitled to three further days following Bank Holiday Mondays (to be specified by the Corporation annually). You are also entitled to a further 35 working days holiday in each holiday year (being the period from 1 September to 31 August). For part time staff, holiday entitlement will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.

Probationary Period

If you are newly appointed to the Corporation, the first 12 months of your employment will be a probationary period, during which your suitability for the position to which you have been appointed will be assessed.
