Job Title:Assistant Chef

Location:The Platt Christian Centre, SW15

Hours:15 hrs a week (3 days 10.00 am – 3 pm)

Salary:£10ph (£7,800 pa)

Annual Leave: 20days including 5Bank Holidays

Main Function of Post

To support the Chef in the preparation of 50-60 meals a day, concentrating specifically on the preparation of desserts.

Main Duties

Toplan a 4 day week menu of hot nutritious lunches and desserts for RISE SW15 that can also bereproduced in Regenerate-RISE’s other projects, following the style that currently exists

To produce the menu on the PC in Publisher ready for printing

To do all theordering and purchasing of food and kitchen cleaning materials on a weekly or monthly basis, ensuring that all ingredients for the lunches are on site by the previous day (apart from the fresh meat) using Asda (on line) and visiting Cash and Carry

To stocktake regularly and rotate stock

To prepare a variety of home-made desserts (hot and cold), washing up and clearing up as you go.

To assist the Chef in serving the meal at lunch time – 12.45 pm sharp and help with the initial clearing up until 2 pm

To use initiative in providing specific dietary requirements.

To keep the kitchen to the highest standard at all times during the day – meeting the requirements of the Environmental Health Officers and for the protection of the clients

To include Regenerate-RISE staff and volunteers in the total number of desserts prepared on a daily basis.

To label and freeze any surplus to requirements

To work extra paid hours when the Chef is on annual leave (20 days a year) nd prepare the whole lunch. Also be willing if required to help out with lunch at Regenerate-RISE’s other venues twice a month (on a normal working day). Extra annual leave will be calculated pro rate for extra days worked. The Chef’s normal hours are 9.30 – 4.30

To prepare a variety of sandwiches for clients to take home for their tea

Additional Duties

To place the kitchen clothing and tea towels in the appropriate place at the end of the day.

To ensure all rubbish and waste products are put promptly in the dustbin, recycling as much as is possible.

To be responsible for the safety of the kitchen equipment used and report any defects to the RISE Co-ordinator

To keep daily temperature charts as required by the Environmental Health Department following the guidelines of the Safer Food Better Business

To consult with clients on the quality of the meals and be willing to listen to any complaints or comments from the members.

To pay particular attention to the Basic Food Hygiene requirements and be prepared to attend training at regular intervals to keep up with current legislation.

To undertake any training considered necessary ie Manual Handling, Health and Safety, etc.

Any other duties as may reasonably be required by the Centre Manager.

ASSISTANT CHEF - PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Current Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or Safer Food Better Business
  • Experience in the kitchen
  • Ability to work out food quantities for large numbers
  • Able to cook traditional English meals and desserts
  • Able to cater for different cultural tastes
  • Willing to do the washing up and cleaning tasks when necessary
  • A tidy and ordered person
  • An understanding of the needs of the elderly
  • A caring, considerate and patient attitude
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Good communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • IT skills for ordering over the Internet and for typing the menu

Desirable

  • Basic First Aid Skills
  • Foundation Food Hygiene certificate
  • Manual Handling certificate

We served an average of 43 lunches a day during July/August/September

We provide alternatives to the main course

We have several Diabetics

We provide a Day Care service and an Outreach Service with activities and outings during the week. The afternoon programme starts around 1.45 pm – 2 pm. A cup of tea/coffee is served by the staff at 3 – 3.15 pm and clients leave to go home around 3.45 pm

We often have Work Experience students in the Centre

We often have guests visiting for lunch

The age range of clients is 61 – 103 years of age

We have a range of disabilities from wheelchair users to registered blind, people who have had strokes, Parkinson’s, Dementia etc

Once a year we do a banquet for 300-400 pensioners in Roehampton in a marquee and staff are expected to help (with a day off in lieu)

We have a new service in Roehampton once a month at St Joseph’s RC Church Hall

We have a new service in Putney Vale once a month at Newlands Hall, Putney Vale

Regenerate-RISE also operates in Ealing, Sheffield and Nottingham

We have a total of 21 staff members and 49 volunteers

Pay day is the last Friday of every month
