Job Title:Aerospace Technical Support Project Manager

Salary:£28,982 - £37,768 per annum,depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Hours of Work:Full-time(36.25 hours per week)5 days per week, 8.30am – 4.50pm Mon-Thurs, 8.30am – 4.25pm Fri

Location:Faculty of Engineering, University Park Campus

Reporting to:Senior Technical Manager

Purpose of the New Role:The overall purpose of this role is to manage the technical support demands for a new Aerospace degree course due to start in September 2016. This will involve project management and liaising with academic and technical members of staff to ensure the technical support infrastructure for this course is delivered on time, and to maintain, prioritise and consolidate the day to day managementand technical support demands for this course.

Main Responsibilities: / % time per year
1. / Project Management:
To liaise closely with Academic members of staff and Senior Technical Managers involved in the development and ongoing management of the Aerospace Degree course to ensure the technical support and technical infrastructure is delivered within the deadlines agreed and to the correct quality standards.
Manage and co-ordinate the creation of new practical elements of the modules, and assess the feasibility of the creation, production and continued improvement of concepts devised by the module convenors.
Identify the technical skills required to implement the practical elements of the Aerospace degree course and ensure these are delivered and maintained. / 35%
2. / Supervision:
To supervise a dedicated team of Engineering Technicians from varying engineering disciplines to ensure completion dates are achieved. Liaise with relevant Senior Technical Managers to select the appropriate technical resources including technical staff, equipment and facilities required for the associated tasks and ensure the efficient and effective day to day management of these technicians. / 25%
3. / Infrastructure:
To liaise with the Head of Faculty Infrastructure to initially ensure space is identified and constantly utilised efficiently to support practical aspects of the Aerospace degree course. / 20%
4. / Teaching:
To design, implement, monitor and develop presentations and teaching methods on basic practical skills covering a limited number of engineering disciplines to present to undergraduate students enrolled on the Aerospace degree course.
To ensure a sufficient number of suitably trained engineering technicians are available to deliver the training via liaison with relevant Senior Technical Managers. / 15%
5. / Safety:
Work closely with the Faculty Safety Team and the relevant Senior Technical Managers to ensure U.K. Health & Safety standards are adhered to according to University Safety Office, and Faculty of Engineering Safety policies. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education /
  • HNC or equivalent in an Engineering discipline, plus substantial work experience in a relevant role OR
  • Proven track record with extensive work experience in a relevant role.

  • Knowledge of a wide range of engineering disciplines including Mechanical, Electrical & Electronic Engineering

Skills/Training /
  • Proven project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills including powerpoint presentations.
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of computer techniques associated with engineering.

  • CAD/CAM experience

Experience /
  • Substantial proven experience working in an Engineering environment
  • Working knowledge in the management of engineering workshops

  • Experience working in a University Engineering environment
  • Working knowledge in the management of undergraduate workshops and teaching laboratories

Statutory/Legal /
  • Understanding of Health & Safety regulations and procedures

Decision Making

  • Independently organise work activities and prioritise work schedules.
  • When to purchase equipment and materials, and when to manufacture.
  • Provide budget costing for resources.
  • Provide specialist advice and assistance to academics and technical staff in the design, construction and testing of bespoke equipment manufactured in the faculty workshops.
  • Purchasing relevant materials, components and services as required.

Additional Information

This role has been created lead the technical team to support the Aerospace degree course. This course was created by the Mechanical Department and Electrical/Electronic Department of the Faculty of Engineeringprimarily to satisfy nationwide demand and to compete with other Universities offering similar degree courses. Elements of the course will require collaboration between mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering disciplines within the Faculty of Engineering.
