JOB TITLE: Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse

This exempt position reports to the Chief Clinical Officer, working under a Collaborative Agreement with a PCA Physician. Responsible for provision of psychiatric health care services to meet bio-psychosocial needs of adult and/or child clients in a community outpatient setting, at several locations.This includes the assessment, diagnosis, and pharmacological management of psychiatric disorders.Advanced Practice Nurse is expected to document client status and response to treatment, function as a member of the treatment team, and assist in promoting a therapeutic and welcoming environment. Advanced Nurse Practitioner must maintain positive provider relations with community providers and organizations, such as Primary Care Physicians and local hospitals, and provide internal and external customer service consistent with PCA’s goal of excellence and professionalism.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducts psychiatric evaluations.
  • Notes physician orders and follows through as needed.
  • Prescribes and evaluates psychotropic medication; administers and monitors injectable medication.
  • Orders screening and/or diagnostic tests.
  • Arranges for treatment of client’s medical needs, when necessary in cooperation with the treatment team.
  • Contacts others involved in client’s care regarding medication/medical treatment issues, as needed.
  • Serves as a member of the treatment team and participates in crisis interventions as needed.
  • Provides consultation and education as needed.
  • Participates in the Quality Improvement program as requested by the Clinical Director.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Clinical Director.
  • Dictates services provided prior to leaving the clinic, if not scheduled to return the next business day.
  • Signs typed dictation within 24 hours after typing.
  • Hand records items requiring same at time of service, as indicated by policy and procedures.
  • Accesses community resources in person and by telephone.
  • Provides for personal safety and that of clients.
  • Maintains regular work attendance and scheduling; works irregular and/or extended hours as indicated by client or agency needs.
  • Maintains voice accessibility to clients and/or other treatment providers.
  • Delivers scheduled services while responding to emergencies/unplanned events and making appropriate referrals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to assess client’s physical needs and common illnesses and to refer appropriately.
  • Ability to differentiate between client’s somatic complaints and actual illness and to counsel appropriately.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands and respond to urgent needs while moving forward on long term goals.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to delegate responsibility through appropriate and effective referrals.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in a crisis.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with clients, families, law enforcement, court officials, staff, and other professionals and providers, and the community in general.
  • Ability to reinforce client right to self-determination while differentiating between dependence-producing and empowering and enabling services.
  • Ability to utilize the current Diagnostic and Statistical manual for all axes (I through V).
  • Knowledge of professional methods of individual, marital, family and group treatment.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic criteria for axes I, II, and III.
  • Knowledge of community agencies and resources.
  • Knowledge of psychological theories and principles of human behavior.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of intervention and treatment of serious mental illness.
  • Knowledge of the relationship and interactions of mental and physical illness and/or substance abuse.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of psychiatric diagnosis(es), terminology and medical record charting.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands in a calm, controlled, and effective manner.
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid Training Certification.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Applicant must have all these credentials:
  • Adult or FamilyPsychiatric Mental Health Advanced Nurse Practitioner;
    – BC (Board Certified) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center;
    – licensed by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing;
    – with prescriptive privileges in Arkansas.
  • Current valid Arkansas Driver’s License with a good driving record.
  • Dependable transportation.
  • CPR and First Aid training.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

*Adult and Child Maltreatment Registry background checks are required.

*A criminal background check and drug screening is required.
