Exit Ticket reflections were categorized: curriculum, standards, instruction, unity, extended learning, miscellaneous.

Curriculum:
I used to think…… / and now I think…
science and social studies had to fit into reading / how does reading fit into science and social studies
of literacy in the vacuum of elementary levels / it crosses across all levels k-12
Calkins RW supported new standards / we need to supplement with more connections to content
the biggest gaps in reading definite were in the k-6 students / it’s a UPK-12 issue
I agreed with much of the information in the hallmark briefs and sill do / that the hallmarks can help us analyze gaps in curriculum and instruction
that I touched on all the hallmarks / I have let a few slip
Standards:
I used to think…. / and now I think….
the shifts were subtle / I have a lot of work to do
the shifts in standards were subtle / we have a lot of work to do!
the new standards would be less flexible / the standards will allow for more flexibility/choice
Instruction:
I used to think…. / and now I think….
most ELA instruction took place in ELA classes / it is across content
discussion was most important for reading / it is equally necessary in writing
writing wasn’t necessary to demonstrate understanding / now I know it is!
the ENL teacher would support ENL students / that classroom teachers have a huge responsibility to support these students.
of literacy in ‘literal’ terms / of expanding literacy knowledge to all staff at a higher level
reading was a one subject topic / reading is cross curricular
the more vocabulary the better / less words, much more depth of words
more text-based writing should be integrated
that scaffolds to engage complex texts were enough / that we need multiple texts at different levels to engage complex content(we should not limit to one text).
common language wasn’t such a road block / it definitely is!
that reading levels were enough to help kids be successful / that reading involves a complex set skills to be taught and reinforced!
leveled texts were only for RTI / leveled texts should be used in core instruction
that classroom discussions are beneficial / they’re a necessity!
reading instruction was already embedded in ELA instruction / there truly is a huge difference and all teachers (regardless of core/content) need help! (PD)
Unity:
I used to think…. / and now I think….
I was alone in noticing gaps or unsuccessful practices / collaborating with others on solutions will help
that there were many similarities in learning gaps / that we have different needs but we do have similar problems
secondary teachers had different concerns / we’re on the same page
we were the only district struggling / we are not alone!
I was alone… / I know this is an educational epidemic. We are fighting a battle together and others have helpful ideas.
that I was an island, glad that others have validated. We need to focus on literacy k-12 / more districts are recognizing the needs of the students
lots of needs not all understood / we are more on the same page with our needs
we were only district with reading support needs / we have an idea where to go
we were alone with our gaps / we are in the same boat as other districts
it was just our district that had a certain gap / it is a common gap
I couldn’t connect to secondary education(as an elementary teacher) / I can and do connect
that some of our literacy problems were unique to our district / the problem is structural across multiple districts
Extended Learning:
I used to think…. / and now I think….
there was not enough time in the day to do this / I can prioritize and work with others to meet my goals
PD was a necessary component of education / it certainly is!
we need lots of PD as the demographics of our district change-literacy needs change / need time and $
we needed a little PD / we need a lot of PD
consistent focus on hallmarks need to be intentionally taught through PD
Miscellaneous:
there was more communication going on in my district / we need more
we had a lot of work to do / we have an enormous amount of work to do
literacy was somewhat a focus / literacy needs to be a focus in our district
we had a lot of work to do / we have a lot more work to do
we were further ahead with literacy development in our district / we have a great deal of work
teachers work hard / we need to work differently
we’d be starting from scratch / we’re already halfway there
that we were under too short a time constraint / we have ample time
