POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title:Advanced Instrumentation Chemist

Job Summary:

Supervise, assist and train laboratory personnel with the analysis of various sample types following approved EPA methodology using advanced analytical instrumentation. Manage, evaluate and review data, staffing, equipment, and resources to validate data quality objectives provide by Laboratory Manager, and regulatory compliance agencies. Perform qualitative & quantitative chemical analyses.

Essential Functions:

Analyze and maintain Quality Control/Quality Assurance on samples utilizing advanced instrumentation such as ICP, and IR.

Supervise and direct the chemists and support staff to ensure adherence to Methods, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and District policies. Direct Quality Control and Quality Assurance on analyses performed by subordinates.

Develop short and long-term goals define objectives for subordinates and set priorities for utilizing resources. Assign and schedule personnel in performing installation, calibration and operation of analytical instrumentation.

Facilitate new ideas from subordinates to improve the processes and generate solutions to problems such as, developing methods to accurately and reliably detect extremely low concentrations of pollutants in low to sub part per billion range.

Critically examine information and equipment for accuracy. Evaluate equipment and make recommendations for purchase.

Undertake on the job training and demonstrate procedures to help others learn. Instruct and supervise personnel in the use of advanced instrumentation and in the associated chemistry and chemical pollutants.

Provide spoken and written information about problems or issues to managers and staff. Present methods and analyses to other governmental agencies and educational facilities.

Integrate information and prepare statistics through utilization of LIMS system. Write programs and specifications for programs for the integration of instrumentation and the information management system.

Evaluate subordinate performance and provide coaching and instruction. Motivate and gain willing cooperation with the team. Maintain discipline and initiate incident and accident reports. Assist in interviewing prospective employees and recommend hires and promotions.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education:Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related laboratory science.

Experience:Four (4) years of experience in Advanced Instrumentation, such as ICP, GFAA, Auto Analyzers, etc. or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Specific Skills:Ability to plan, organize and supervise, present ideas and data clearly, establish effective working relationships, and instruction of others.

Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc:

Class III Wastewater Analyst Certificate OR Class III Wastewater Operator License.

Extensive knowledge of advanced instrumentation and interpretation of data produced, chemical theories, laboratory methods, and supervisory practices.

Familiar with Word, Excel and report writers.

Valid state of Ohio driver’s license and a driving record in accordance with the District’s insurance carrier.

Working Conditions:

General office and laboratory environment.

Physical Demands:

Up to 20% of time spent sitting, standing, or walking with occasional stooping or climbing. 100% of time spent wearing eye protection.
