This vital role has one clear aim – to build the effectiveness of internal communications amongst our 5,000, staff members in 120 countries. You will be responsible for running our regular internal communication mechanisms, in particular the intranet and our weekly e-news bulletin, and support our internal campaigns. By doing this, you’ll help raise our internal understanding of, and engagement with, our priorities for children.
You must have the confidence to work effectively at all levels and with people from varied backgrounds. You must be a natural communicator with strong written and computer skills. You must also be able to work as part of a cross-departmental team.
Job Purpose
To build the effectiveness of internal communications across Save the Children. To contribute to the coordination and dissemination of information that builds internal understanding of, and engagement, with Save the Children’s priorities.
Key accountabilities
1. Deliver our day-to-day internal communications service including monitoring the internal comms email inbox, editing/sending all-staff emails and managing a programme of internal events.
2. Produce a weekly e-newsletter for the organisation – includes sourcing content, writing/editing copy, collating and sending it out to all staff.
3. Update the intranet homepage – includes writing features, news articles, a weekly poll and managing a discussion forum.
4. Provide technical support and editorial guidance to the community of approx 50 Intranet Editors.
5. Support in managing and running monthly London staff meetings.
6. Keep staff engaged and informed about our campaigns.
7. Support staff in communicating our brand and key messages – includes giving brand and editorial advice and disseminating our publications and resources.
8. Responsible for monitoring and evaluation of our internal communication channels including monthly intranet statistics and feedback from monthly London office staff meetings.
9. Raise awareness throughout organisation of internal communication tools and services and profiling of Internal Communications team externally.
10. Ensure that all communication produced by Internal Communications supports the brand.
11. Perform other tasks as required from for the smooth running of the team, cross-departmental teams, the department and Save the Children UK, and to deputise for the Head of Team if required.
Working contacts
Internal: Wide range of contacts across all departments and in the field with staff at a range of levels, for advising, training, coordinating tasks, negotiating solutions and promoting standards. High level of involvement with Marketing and Communications, Advocacy, Information Services, HR and Global Programmes.
External: Internal communication professionals in the International Development sector and elsewhere
Person specification
Essential
Experience working in internal communication, ideally in a complex global organisation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience of updating, and writing and editing content for an intranet
Experience of using a Content Management System and basic knowledge of HTML
Computer literate
Experience in delivering internal campaigns and a knowledge of internal communication best practice.
Strong interpersonal and influencing skills. Experience and confidence in dealing effectively with staff at all levels.
Ability to effectively plan, manage, organise and prioritise varied and fluctuating workloads in a pressurised environment, often to tight-deadlines.
A commitment to team-working and a willingness to contribute to cross-departmental initiatives
A commitment to Save the Children UK’s vision, mission, values and approach (equal opportunities etc)
Willingness and ability to carry out day-to-day administrative tasks to support your own work.
Desirable
Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and web authoring software, eg, Adobe Dreamweaver.
Awareness of web accessibility and usability best practices.
Experience in using social media and video production
