Job profile:Assistant to the Safeguarding Co-ordinator

Reporting to:Safeguarding Co-ordinator

Job Purpose:To assist the Safeguarding Co-ordinator in the implementation of National Safeguarding Policies of the Catholic Church on behalf of the Bishop and Trustees of the Diocese of Westminster.

Development and Training

The Assistant Safeguarding Co-ordinator is to work in conjunction with the Safeguarding Coordinator in relation to development and training which includes:

  • To carry out audits to identify the needs of the volunteer safeguarding personnel in parishes and religious orders
  • To develop and deliver induction training to the volunteer safeguarding personnel
  • To develop and deliver awareness training in parishes and religious orders
  • To provide continuous education and support to parishes and religious orders
  • To provide support to parishes and religious orders in the appointment of volunteers safeguarding personnel
  • To develop and deliver an effective training programme for parish clergy and volunteer safeguarding personnel in relation to safeguarding issues and responsibilities and where necessary to identify and contract out that training

Case Management

In all circumstances related to case management, the Assistant Safeguarding Co-ordinator is to assist and be directed by the Safeguarding Co-ordinator (or the Episcopal Vicar for Safeguarding in his/her absence) which includes;

  • To consider referrals and assess and manage risk accordingly
  • To maintain appropriate accurate and timely written case records as required
  • To operate confidential and secure procedures and processes for gathering, assimilating and storing information
  • To attend professional and other meetings as required
  • To update the Safeguarding Commission on cases in the absence of the Safeguarding Co-ordinator

General

To operate National Safeguarding Policies and best practice within the Diocese.

  • To follow all Safeguarding policies and procedures currently in place in the Catholic Church in England and Wales
  • To analyse the finding of internal audits and identify systems and procedures to support the audit outcomes
  • To travel to parishes and other locations as the needs of the post require
  • To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility for this post which may from time to time be required

Person specification:Assistant to the Safeguarding Co-ordinator

Contract type:Temporary

Salary range:£25-27K pro rata (neg)

Hours of work:28 hours per week (4 days a week)

Qualifications:

  1. Experience of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults
  2. Broad understanding of safeguarding within the Catholic Church
  3. Experience of supporting volunteers
  4. Excellent written and oral communications
  1. Ability to be persuasive when the other party is resistant
  2. Training delivery skills
  3. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and databases and understanding of IT
  4. Good attention to detail
  5. Ability to adhere to the principles of confidentiality

The professional background of the Assistant Safeguarding Co-ordinator is not restricted to those with a social work qualification. It may encompass those with experience and qualifications from other disciplines including the law, probation, health and the voluntary sector.

Because of the nature of the role a DBS check will be required.
