Prior to testing for the position of POLICE OFFICER with the City of Port St. Lucie, an individual must meet the minimum qualifications listed in Florida State Statute 943.13.

  • Law Enforcement (Military or Civilian) or Corrections experience desired but not required.
  • College education preferred but not required.

This position is an Essential classification and will require you to report to duty after a hurricane or emergency.

POSITION SUMMARY: General duty police work enforcing laws and ordinances related to the protection of life and property, directing and controlling traffic, preventing crime or disturbance of peace, and arresting suspected violators by performing the duties as described in the attached Position Description.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Florida Law Enforcement Certification as set forth by the Florida Police Standards Council. Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university preferred. If served in the military, an honorable discharge is required. Valid Florida Driver's License and maintenance of clean driving record. A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

ADA PROFILE: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to drive, walk, talk, hear, taste and smell. The employee is frequently required to stand;use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, jump and run. The employee is occasionally required to sit; endure sustained acts of physical exhaustion and periods of duty under unfavorably and life-threatening conditions and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
