An exciting opportunity to work across the finance and programmes teams at Teach A Man To Fish, a UK international development charity aiming to transform education in developing countries to combat global youth unemployment.

We are looking for a motivated and resourceful individual with excellent financial and organisational skills to join our small and dynamic charity to assist with the efficient and smooth running of ourfinance team, as well as to provide admin and programmes support across the organisation.

At Teach A Man To Fish our mission is to address global youth unemployment and poverty by providing practical, relevant education to young people in developing countries. We support schools to set up school businesses which provide hands-on training and experience for pupils. This boosts quality of education and employability - bridging the gap between education and the workplace - so that students leave school with the right skills to get a good job or run their own successful business.

We are a small organisation with big reach - since 2006 we have brought the pioneering school-business model to more than 80 countries, reaching over 80,000 beneficiaries and supporting them to reach their full potential in work and in life.

About the role

This is an exciting time at Teach A Man To Fish – we are growing rapidly and have given ourselves the ambitious target of reaching 1,000,000 young people by 2020.

To support this growth means strengthening our financial management, administration and programmes capacity.

The role would covera range of core finance activities (with training where required) including recording income, processing payments, preparing bank reconciliations andproducing budget reports.

Programmes support would include working on donor reports, monitoring and evaluation processes, design of internal policies, project finance, and creation of education, fundraising and communication resources.

This is an opportunity for an individual passionate about international development to build on their existing skills and to gain valuable experience in this sector.

Responsibilities

  • Process invoices,staff expense claimsand other payments
  • Paying in cheques and cashand manage the petty cash system
  • Monitor use of the company pre-paid cards and reconcile the monthly statements
  • Reconciling bank accounts and petty cash
  • Maintain accounting system (QuickBooks) up-to-date
  • Assist staff and Accountant with finance related queries
  • Archiving and filing of finance documentation
  • Project management tasks including financial reporting, production of resources and support for in-country support staff
  • Project management administration
  • Write donor reports and steward donors
  • Monitor, evaluate and assess impact of projects
  • Contribute to wider work on strengthening programmatic systems and processes
  • Represent Teach A Man To Fish externally at conferences, meetings and other events.
  • Recruit and line manage UK volunteers as necessary.
  • Basic office management & IT support tasks

Person Specification

The successful applicant will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

Essential:

  • Right to live and work in the UK (no applications will be processed from applicants without this right).
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Experience working within a financial, administrative or programmes related role in an office environment
  • Solutions-orientated with a demonstrated ability to proactively identify and solve problems.
  • Willingness to learn new systems and processes
  • Ability to manage own workload and show initiative
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and produce accurate work to a high standard
  • Ability to manage emails, telephone enquiries and finance tasks efficiently
  • Skills in effective use of Microsoft office, particularly Excel, Outlook and Word
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Commitment to the aims and purpose of Teach A Man To Fish
  • Flexible approach and positive ‘can do’ attitude
  • Demonstrated interest in international development and education

Desirable:

  • Undergraduate degree in accountancy
  • AAT qualified
  • Experience of using QuickBooks
  • Experience working in an international charity in UK or overseas
  • Project management experience and/or qualifications
  • French or Spanish language skills at intermediate or higher level

Reports to: Accountant, Head of International Programmes

Direct Reports: None but management of UK office volunteers is part of the role.

Salary: £18,000-£19,500 per annum pro rata

Working hours and contract

This role is available as either a full time (40 hours per week) or part time (24 – 32 hours per week)position. The post is initially intended as a fixed term 12-month contract. However, subject to performance, at the end of the contract we would hope to be able to extend this period or offer the candidate a more senior position.
