OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

------

§  To ensure successful delivery of the Wildlife Trust’s objectives in Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan.

§  To have management responsibility for the Taf Fechan Nature Reserve, including implementing management plans and developing a network of volunteers.

§  To undertake educational events and projects.

§  To work with partner organisations to develop and implement conservation and education objectives throughout Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

------

·  To ensure successful delivery of the Wildlife Trust’s objectives in Merthyr Tydfil, on time and to budget.

·  To develop and line manage volunteers in Merthyr Tydfil.

·  To manage the Trust’s Taf Fechan Nature Reserve, including delivery of management activities, liaising with voluntary wardens, contractors and graziers, in accordance to the management plan and objectives.

·  Engage with and encourage communities and landowners in MTCBC, to become more actively involved in nature conservation in the area.

·  To represent WTSWW and advise landowners and communities on wildlife habitats in the area and develop the establishment, management and promotion of Wildlife Sites.

·  In conjunction with the other WTOs, and senior WTSWW staff, fundraise for and deliver conservation projects in the area.

·  To ensure that all legal and statutory responsibilities affecting the Trust are met.

·  To respond to local planning issues where appropriate.

·  To work with partners in the region to ensure appropriate and complementary delivery of conservation objectives throughout the area.

·  To represent WTSWW at events and meetings where appropriate.

·  To lead walks and talks for public, schools and other groups.

·  Membership recruitment according to organisation’s targets.

·  To undertake other duties appropriate to the post, that may be requested from time to time by the Line Manager or Senior Management Team.

JOB SPECIFICATION

·  Management and supervision

The post holder will be required to develop and manage a regular group of volunteers for the Taf Fechan Nature Reserve. The post holder will also be responsible for supervision of contractors, and have overall responsibility for conservation volunteers. Staff may be located across a number of locations in the region.

·  Accountability and resources

The post holder will be responsible for the management of project budgets relating to projects delivered in the Merthyr Tydfil. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to funding and management of larger projects delivered by the Trust across multiple counties.

·  Job impact

This role has significant external impact in Glamorgan and particularly MTCBC through the management of Taf Fechan Nature Reserve and level of partnership working involved. There is also significant internal impact through contributions to school and other contract projects as well as assisting with the delivery of large scale projects elsewhere in the Trust area.

·  Independence and judgement

This role requires significant independence and an ability to make decisions locally on a regular basis. Assistance is available from all members of the Senior Management Team when required but the post requires the holder to exercise knowledge of the local area and apply it to decisions about local work and also the strategic development of the Trust.

·  People and contacts

This post will require regular partnership working, in relation to the management of the reserves and wider landowner and community liaison.

·  Creativity and Innovation

Through the development of new projects, writing of management plans and problem-solving required in land management, this post requires an innovative approach and the ability to find new solutions.

·  Working conditions

The post-holder will be required to spend the majority of time in the MTCBC area, though occasional work elsewhere will be required. The post holder will occasionally be required to work unsociable hours, including dawn, evening and at weekends.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

·  Experience

Candidates should have a minimum of three years of experience working / volunteering in the conservation sector.

·  Competence, knowledge and skills

Essential

Reserve knowledge

Project management (including contracts and budgets)

Knowledge of H&S and risk assessments

Understanding of Biodiversity planning process

Experience of working staff management and working with volunteers

Full driving licence

Ability to work in an out-posted situation

Excellent communicator both in written (reports) and verbal forms

Desirable

Appropriate degree or equivalent qualification

Understanding of development planning and legislation

Welsh speaker or learner

4 wheel drive experience and trailer handling, chainsaw, pesticides

·  Personal qualities

It is essential that the post-holder is a self-motivated individual capable of managing both themselves and their staff/volunteers effectively with limited day-to-day supervision. They also need to be strong communicators, able to keep in regular contact with other staff when working over large geographical areas.
