Position: waterfront Coordinator

Accountable to:Camp Director

Reports to:Camp Director

General Description: Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Waterfront Coordinatoris a member of the Senior staff. He/she is responsible for the development and delivery of waterfront activities through oversight and management ofbeach and boatingstaff. The fundamental purpose of Camp Opemikon’s Summer Camp is to provide a safe, fun-filled and educational camping experience. Campers have an opportunity to develop outdoor skills and personal growth in a residential camping environment. The Waterfront Coordinatoris usually a seasoned staff member who has a keen interest in the well-being of the camper, and also in the development of other staff members. This position requires confidence, flexibility and an interest to support a large multi-disciplinary team to ensure success of operations.

Waterfront Staff:Head Guard (1), Head Boatie (1), Lifeguards (3), Assistant Boatie (1)

Work Time:

  • Approximately 40 hours, upon hirethrough June for staff selection, promotion, program development, pre-camp training and final set-up
  • June 25th to August 12th, 2017
  • NOTE: 2017 Camp periods run Saturday afternoon to Saturday morning

SALARY:$3,900for total period *Accommodations and meals are included in the compensation package*

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Camp Director, provide input in the development ofresource operationsin the Waterfront area.
  • Apply Scouts Canada and Ontario Camps Association program standards to all activities.
  • Assist in the hiring ofWaterfrontstaff.
  • Assist with key Summer Camp promotional activities and champion recruitment and engagement.
  • Assist in development and delivery of pre-camp training program (on location at camp and in the City of Ottawa).
  • Work closely with other Senior Staff members in operations development, weekly schedules and joint activities.
  • Conduct a weekly operations evaluation, and provide highlights and opportunities to Camp Director.
  • Implement an equipment inspection upon return from out-trips and conduct weekly site inspections.
  • Provide input into program supply purchases/ensure current equipment is maintained in proper working condition.
  • Develop, coach and supervise the Waterfront and associated activity area staff.
  • Provide weekly feedback to direct reports (written evaluations required for mid-summer and end of contract).
  • Display enthusiasm for activities, personal cleanliness, dress, speech, manners, and relations with campers/staff.
  • Support Summer Program Director with camper transportation and check in process at camp and/or in Ottawa.
  • Assist in all other related administrative duties as requested by the Camp Director.
  • Ensure adherence to Scouts Canada risk management procedures and its Outdoor Activity Guide.
  • Provide a final written report within 14 days of conclusion of camp

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Experienced in working with youth and adults in an outdoor residential camp
  • Experienced in developing, coaching and supervising peer staff
  • Knowledge of Scouts Canada, OCA, Health and Safety and Watercraft Operator’s requirements.
  • Up-to-date Standard First Aid, CPR, Boat Operator’s License and NLS
  • Embodies personal beliefs in keeping with the Mission, Principles and Practices of Scouts Canada
  • Demonstrated appropriate attitude, skills and knowledge for the position
  • Proven leadership and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong communication and human relations skills
  • Completes Scouts Canada screening process including a clear Police Records Check, with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Is prepared to complete all necessary training, including Pre-Camp Training
  • Willing to work non-traditional hours
  • Access to a vehicleand possession of valid Driver’s License an asset
  • Good physical health
