Job Description

POSITION: English Teacher (Grades 9-12); experience with Advanced Placement courses preferred but not required.

SALARY GRADE: State Salary Schedule plus local supplement

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher aides.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Four year degree from a college or university
  • Major, or 24 semester hours, in English (secondary level) (Grades 9-12)
  • Passing score on Praxis II Test in subject area to be taught
  • Valid N.C. teaching license/certificate, or be able to obtain such.

NATURE OF WORK: An employee in this class provides direct instruction to students. A wide variety of tasks are performed in the teaching-learning process for students, the primary one being to help students learn the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible adults. A teacher performs his/her duties under the supervision of, and reports to, the principal.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaches District approved curriculum
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Plans a program of study, employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students
  • Assists in diagnosing the learning disabilities of students, with the assistance of district specialists
  • Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
  • Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when student is participating in an inclusive activity.

Ability to perform general clerical duties.

Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom.

Ability to operate common office machines.

Ability to maintain basic files and records.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitates by work assignments.

  • Language Skills-Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Mathematical Skills-Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Ability-Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills-Familiarity with basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.
  • Physical Demands-While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds (school supplies, books, etc.).
