General Class Description: Operates an Iowa Braille School vehicle, driving an assigned staff member anywhere in the state, under all types of weather and road conditions. Continuously applies safe driving practices and observes applicable state laws governing the operation of motor vehicles.

Reports To: Regional Director

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  Transport authorized persons by school vehicle as scheduled.

2.  Obtain help and/or shelter for passengers in times of emergency or necessity.

3.  Obtain medical assistance for any medical emergency as soon as practicable and possible.

4.  Report all emergencies and accidents to the Regional Administrator.

5.  Report all vehicle service needs and safety deficiencies to the Plant Services Supervisor.

6.  Obtain gasoline and mechanical emergency service while in transit.

7.  Complete records and reports as necessary, including safety check lists.

8.  Maintain interior and exterior cleanliness of vehicle, and service gas and oil as prescribed.

9.  Represents the Iowa Braille School in a positive manner to parents and to the public.

10.  Assists assigned staff member with materials, preparation, logistics, etc.

11.  Assists assigned staff member to provide services to students, parents, professionals and paraprofessionals throughout Iowa.

12.  Maintains confidentiality of student information and records.

13.  Maintains a safe environment for students and strives to meet their needs.

14.  Supports the school’s strategic plan and adheres to school policies and procedures.

15.  Complies with personnel policies.

16.  Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.

17.  Demonstrates willingness to support change for the improvement of services to students.

18.  Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1.  Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers.

2.  Ability to safely operate and ensure proper maintenance of vehicles.

  1. Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing operation of state vehicles.
  2. Knowledge of motor vehicle laws.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

Three years related (over-the-road) driving experience and possession of a current chauffeur's license.
