Job Description – Home Support Worker (Non Registered Service)

Main purpose of job
To support people with dementia in their own homes and contribute to delivering an effective and high quality service. To provide personalised practical one-to-one support for people with dementia from their own home in accordance with the reasonable wishes of the person with dementia and the carer.

Scope of job family
Home support involves a trained member of staff supporting a person with dementia from the person’s own home, for agreed hours. It is sometimes known as domiciliary support, day support at home, respite support or a relief service.
Services that also provide personal care or prompts for personal care during a support session are required to be registered with the appropriate regulatory body as described below[1]. This service is not provided as part of this job.
Dimensions and limits of authority
There are no budgetary or staff related responsibilities associated with this job.
Duties and key responsibilities
- To visit the homes of families and perform duties as specified by the manager of the service and in line with the agreed support plan.
- Where appropriate and acceptable, to engage the person with dementia in activities to stimulate their interests and support them in maintaining life skills.
- To treat the person with dementia with dignity and respect at all times and maintain their rights to privacy and confidentiality.
- Where appropriate, and in accordance with the support plan, to accompany the person with dementia outside the home.
- Where appropriate, assist the person with dementia with light, therapeutic domestic tasks, for example, washing up, preparing vegetables or light shopping.
- To offer information on dementia, on caring for a person with dementia and details of local resources.
- To submit detailed reports of each visit and complete timesheets and expenses claims as required.
- To participate in regular timetabled supervision with a line manager and attend staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- To observe and report back promptly to the manager any alterations in circumstances that could affect service provision.
- To attend case reviews where appropriate.

- To work collaboratively with fundraising and media and campaigns teams, sharing responsibility for the achievement of jointly agreed objectives, as appropriate.

- To implement the Society’s health and safety policy and procedures, ensuring that all practices and procedures are undertaken in accordance with a healthy and safe working environment and that all staff and volunteers for whom you may be responsible are aware of their responsibilities in respect of their role, monitoring data and recommending action as required.
- To administrate and organise own work to ensure that it is accurate and meets quality targets, reasonable deadlines and reporting requirements.
- To follow the Society’s management information guidelines and requirements, including ensuring appropriate monthly measures on service usage levels are collected and submitted on the services database or other systems in accordance with deadlines.
- Where appropriate, to recruit, induct and support volunteers.
- To undertake any other tasks, duties or projects which may arise from time to time which are commensurate with the general level of this post and as directed by the designated line manager.
