Job Description: Graduate Student Researcher, UCSF Global Health Sciences (GHS)

GHS a world-class interdisciplinary educational, service and research organization dedicated to improving health and reducing the burden of disease in the world's most vulnerable populations. We integrate UCSF expertise in the health, social, and biological sciences, and focus that expertise on training global health leaders of tomorrow and developing solutions to today’s most pressing health challenges.

The student researcher will work with a GHS professor to develop a website around a book she is co-editingon global health data. The book, intended for students and practitioners, will provide a comprehensive overview of new methodologies alongside the novel use of traditional methods for data collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination. Each chapter provides state of the art information written by experts in the field. The Global Health Data Website will be a ‘one-stop shop’ around the book chapters, providing a summary of each chapter, a link to the chapter, links to all the resources that the authors have suggested and to other sites that provide: the latest methodologies, technical developments and findings published in peer-reviewed papers, books, manuals and on web sites; metadata, open data, and tabulated comparative indicators; educational materials; news stories, blogs and videos; and links to relevant organizations such as statistical offices and international data providers. Additionally, the site will provide advice about interpreting specific health indictors.

Hours per week: Flexible 6 to 8 depending on the stage of project and by agreement between the Principal Investigator and the Graduate Student Researcher.

Period of Performance: 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2019

Hourly Rate: $18.18

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Search for similar types of portals/websiteswhich the Global Health Data Website will complement.
  • Interview some UCSF students and faculty, and email potential international users to ascertain requirements for the website.
  • Work with GHS and the editors to plan, design and maintain the site.
  • For each Website topic (corresponding with a book chapter or section):ask the authors/editors to recommend resources and additional material; explore the web for this and other available material;and establish the necessary links on the Website.
  • Enter all references into reference management software and ensure that they are correctly formatted and referred to in each chapter.
  • Check the websites referred to by authors and archive them on Webcite
  • Work with the editors at proof stage to prepare the index for the book
  • Communicate and promote the Website and obtain feedback to improve it.
  • Develop tools for the Website as appropriate.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Ability to undertake multiple specialized web searches.
  • Experience working in the data environment.
  • Strong communication and website marketing skills.
  • Interest in global health data.

Preferred qualifications

  • Skilled in designing, developing and maintaining websites.
  • Experience using Excel database and reference management software.
