GENERAL DUTIES

NAME:

POST: Practice Nurse (Maternity Cover June-Dec)

QUALIFICATION: Registered General Nurse/Enrolled Nurse

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Dr Clarke and Partners under the terms of the Contract of Employment

Nursing and Midwifery Council according to the Code of Professional Conduct (2002)

You have a professional accountability to the Patient

(NB: The vicarious liability of your employer extends only to the terms and procedures set out in this job description. The post holder is strongly recommended to have indemnity insurance through the Royal College of Nursing or Medical Defence Union.)

RESPONSIBLE TO:

JOB SUMMARY:

§  To provide clinical nursing services to patients registered with the practice, and sometimes to patients registered outside the practice, within the professional competence of the post holder.

§  To accept and undertake relevant training before new duties are undertaken.

§  To refer patients as appropriate to other agencies within or outside the practice, or where the problem cannot be dealt with by the post holder.

§  The post holder will always work in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct.

§  The post holder will assist in the running of the treatment room, ordering of stock and routine maintenance of equipment.

§  The post holder will give routine opportunistic health promotion advice as appropriate.

1.  KEY TASKS:

§  Perform nursing treatments for patients as requested by the General Practitioners, according the patient need, and/or in accordance with agreed protocols/practice policy (Appendix 1).

§  Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments according to practice policy, current evidence and best practice.

§  Appropriate prescribing for patients seen in appointments.

§  Give opportunistic health promotion advice as appropriate according to current recommendations and best practice.

§  Assist in maintaining supplies and equipment used.

§  Keep accurate records and statistics, either written or on computer.

2.  OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

§  To participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team.

§  To assist in the formulation of practice policy and protocols, and in practice development.

§  To participate in research within the practice.

§  To participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines within the practice.

§  To liaise with other agencies as appropriate, hospital or community, social services staff and voluntary organizations.

§  To maintain personal professional development.

3.  EXTRA RESPONSIBILITIES

§  The post holder may assure responsibility for specific or specialised aspects of patient care, after completing the appropriate training/education (Appendix 2).

§  Any extra responsibility taken will be on a voluntary basis, with the full approval of the employing General Practitioners.

§  Any extra responsibility taken will be in addition to, but not at the expense of, the key tasks set out in section 1.

NB All practice staff should be aware of their responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

THIS JOB DESCRIPTION WILL BE SUBJECT TO PERIODIC REVIEW AND AMENDMENT IN CONSULTATION WITH THE POST HOLDER.

CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT

§  Hypertension screening

§  Diabetes advice/management

The post holder should be familiar with current guidelines for resuscitation and the treatment of anaphylaxis, and be able to locate and use emergency equipment within the surgery.
