JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the After School FunCounselor helps implement the after school program through individual and small group activities for children ages 5-10 (Kindergarten through 5th grade).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise participants from time of arrival on site until the end of each day’s program unless otherwise indicated in writing by the child’s parent or guardian.
  • Conduct both individual and group activities in a manner which assures the health and safety of each child.
  • Watches, monitors and communicates any special set-up, cleaning or maintenance needs to the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Keeps Recreation Supervisor informed regarding problems or potential problems (i.e., disruptive behavior).
  • Maintain and submit accurate records (attendance, purchases, etc.).
  • Responsible for knowing and following the park rules, regulations and guidelines listed in the counselor manual (orientation and training scheduled prior to the start of the program).

HOURS:

The program meets 3:00-6:15pm Mondays at Walker Elementary School and Thursdays at Prospect Elementary School during the 2014-2015 school year. Minimum 3 hours per week; maximum 6 hours per week.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Individual must be minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Previous camp or childcare experience and knowledge of program planning and implementation is preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is required.
  • A valid Illinois class “D” driver’s license is required.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively support the safety program that will effectively control and reduce accidents.
  • Obey the practical safety rules, regulations and procedures established by the safety program that is pertinent to the activities conducted by the department.
  • Promptly report to the Superintendent of Recreation, Safety Coordinator or member of Safety Committee all unsafe actions, practices or conditions observed.
  • A Criminal Background Check will be conducted on each employee hired and employment is dependent on “clean” report.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid Training Certification, or provide a copy of current certifications that don’t expire before the ending date of the program.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Personnel and Employment Policy.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The After School Fun Counselor must resolve differences and problems that arise with patrons and employees. The After School Fun Counselor is responsible for safe and well-organized recreational programs. The After School Fun Counselor may also have to work under stressful situations especially when first aid or CPR is required.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:

May be required to work during various weather conditions. When activities are held indoors, these conditions may include lighting and temperature. When activities are held outdoors, these conditions may include hot or cold temperatures or rain.

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS:

The After School Fun Counselor must exhibit good problem solving ability and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Clarendon Hills Park District. Must have the ability to read, write and organize materials. Must be able to supervise others and have good safety awareness.
