Reporting to:Café Manager

Aim

  • For people affected by homelessness to secure employment in the catering sector as a result of the vocational training at Café from Crisis.
  • For the cafeto be a popular and thriving social enterprise café, known for its qualityfood and drink offer, efficient service and unique environment.

Dimension

  • Responsible for ensuring the effective commercialoperations of the kitchen, throughcreating and profitable menus, boosting the café’s profile and increasing customer return.

Circumstances

  • 40 hours per week as per rota
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required and overtime will be paid for this
  • The role involves working with vulnerable adults and young people; a satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service is required.

Salary

£22,376 per annum

Principle Accountabilities

  • Directly deliver the agreed training activities alongside the café’s daily operations.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring high quality trainingand keep appropriate assessment records for accountability purposes and track and inform progression.
  • Liaise as required with internal moderators and other representatives of awarding bodies.
  • Keep the trainers motivated, enthused and structured – committed to finishing the programme and instilling a sense of pride in their work
  • Develop and improve high quality and creative menus, recipes and product lines, in line with budget,key trends, the competitive market and customer needs
  • Transparent quality, waste and portion control systems
  • Keep kitchen costs within budget, maximising savings and reviewing regularly
  • Ensure a tight stock control system is maintained with appropriate tracking records
  • Operate a high functioning kitchen system through production, prep and spec sheets in line with the training system
  • Build and maintain good working relationships with a range of customers
  • Active in ensuring the cafes profile is developed within the local community though marketing, social media and effective communication
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and ensure that health and safety systems are adhered to continuously

Contribution to the team and organisation

  • Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of wider Crisis activities, especially when considering a holistic and fulfilling training experience for the trainees
  • In conjunction with the Employment team, identify trainees that, with one-to-one coaching, would be ready to move-on to employment and / or further education
  • In conjunction with the Progression and Employment teams, identifytrainees that are struggling to commit and would benefit from support and coaching to remain engaged.
  • Participate in professional development activities in order to remain an innovative trainer, well equipped with effective tools and methods for training.
  • Participate in the improvement of resources to ensure an inspiring learning environment.

General

  • Actively encourage and support member involvement at Crisis
  • To develop and maintain an understanding of the charity’s work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people
  • To comply with Crisis policies and procedures, including Health and Safety policies, for which all employees owe a duty of care both to themselves and others, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
  • To carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job

Person Specification

Essential

  1. Substantial catering industry experience – including kitchen management and catering for groups of people
  2. Experience of training and developing teams and individualsin a commercial kitchen
  3. Knowledge of food standard regulations and posession of a Food Safety Level 2 certificate
  4. Experience of designing and developing creative menus and recipes that can be cooked from scratch daily, in accordance to stock levels and trainee attendance
  5. Active interest in local and national food and drink trends and an active interest in developments within the catering and catering education sectors.
  6. Experience of working with vulnerable adults and knowledge of the barriers to employment that homeless people face.
  7. A patient and empathetic person who can maintain welcoming and professional standards even in pressurised situations.
  8. Ability to work on a rota basis which will include occassional evenings and weekends
  9. Commitment to Crisis’s purpose and values including equality and social inclusion
