Aim

  • Ensure Café from Crisis is a thriving social enterprise demonstrable through increased income, profile and customer loyalty
  • Lead the cafes effective and inspirational training programme that enables people to move into employment and out of homelessness
  • Work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the café space smoothly operates as a commercial space from morning till evening

Dimension

  • Responsibility for managing the Crisis staff team and improving financial and charitable performance

Circumstances

  • 40 hours per week as per rota
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required and overtime will be paid for this
  • The role involves working with vulnerable adults and young people; a satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service is required
  • Reporting to Crisis' Director of Innovation and enterprise but, operationally on a day-to day basis to the Director of Crisis Skylight Oxford

Background

Crisis is dedicated to ending homelessness by delivering life-changing services and campaigning for change.

Café from Crisis is a social enterprise café, with the twin aims of being both a successful business as a thriving busy café; and a training project providing a route into employment for homeless people. Under the guidance of the Crisis café team, trainees will receive individually tailor made training and hands on practical experience.

The café is located in the Old Fire Station in the centre of Oxford city. The building also accommodates Crisis Skylight Oxford which is a centre for people who are homeless; offering practical, creative and vocational workshops, accredited learning opportunities and one to one coaching.

As well as Crisis, the Old Fire station also accommodates Arts at the Old Fire Station (AOSF), an arts company with a range of flexible spaces open to the public including a theatre, dance studio and gallery They work closely with the Crisis team and provide opportunities for homeless people, the professional arts and wider communities to meet, learn, network and participate together.

Principle Accountabilities

Commercial Operations

  • Effective management and leadership of the Crisis café staff team and the trainees
  • Ensure café from Crisis runs smoothly consistently. This is a hands on role that requires frequent presence on the shop floor in the day
  • Ensure AOFS are in a position to be able to take on the space and run it smoothly and efficiently in the evening
  • Deliver effective pricing strategies that enable the café to be competitive and have healthy profit margins on sales
  • Ensure that menus and products are continually and creatively developed with the team so that the café thrives in a fast developing area saturated with cafes
  • Ensure the café’s profile is developed within the local community though marketing, social media and effective communication and contribution to the production of new marketing material
  • Build and sustain strong partnerships to identify and develop opportunities and profile building, consideringcatering contracts, opening hours, space optimization and events
  • Manage costs within budget, ensure efficient administrative and financial processing and contribute to business planning, reporting, budgeting and forecasting with the Head of Cafes
  • Contribute to the improvement and building of financial reporting systems
  • Ensure the café remains an active member of the social enterprise community, taking advantage of profile building opportunities and networking to build relationships.

Training

  • Effective management of the training team to ensure the delivery of the training programme, leading to successful employment outcomes
  • Establish and nurture links internally and with the wider hospitality sector and other homelessness organisations in Oxford, and build reputation as an excellent training cafe
  • Build new relationships to increase impact and number of people into work
  • Create and maintain an enabling, positive and inclusive learning environment for all trainees
  • Ensure thecorrect recording and monitoring of all trainees’ progress.

Contribution to the team and organisation

  • Lead and develop a proactive and motivated café team that is committed to Crisis’ aims
  • Create and maintain strong and productive relationships between all the staff at Crisis Skylight Oxford and the café team
  • Ensure that any safeguarding concerns are identified and reported in line with Crisis’ procedures.
  • Work closely with the Director of Crisis Skylight Oxford and the Director of AOFS to ensure the smooth management of the building, which is a unique public space, ensuring that is welcoming to all whilst maximising all commercial opportunities.

General

  • Actively encourage and support member involvement within Crisis
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of Crisis’ work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people
  • Comply with Crisis policies and procedures, including Health and Safety policies, for which all employees owe a duty of care both to themselves and others, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job

Person Specification

Essential

  1. Experience of managing a café / restaurant or other catering establishment with a proven track record of building income and driving sales
  2. Experience eof providing strategic direction and implementing change
  3. Ability to motivate, inspire and energise teams to achieve successful outcomes
  4. Confidence to make decisions and take ownership
  5. Trained in food standard regulations and to hold or obtain Food Safety Level 3 certificate
  6. Experience of monitoring and recording waste, Environmental Health, health and safety and quality control systems, in a commercial catering setting
  7. Enthusiastic and influential communication skills, capable of building beneficial and positive networks
  8. Competent use of MS Word, Excel and Outlook, databases, social media. Ability to write engaging copy and update web pages (with training).
  9. Knowledge of local and national food and drink trends and an active interest in catering and catering education sectors
  10. An interest in social enterprise
  11. Sound knowledge of health and safety issues and safeguarding procedures to ensure a safe environment is provided for members, staff, volunteers, supporters and visitors
  12. Commitment to Crisis ‘purpose and values including equality and social inclusion
