JOB DESCRIPTION: Teaching Assistant

RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible under the direction of the teacher to work with individual pupils or to work with small groups to supervise physical and general care of pupils and enable learning. To support access to learning for pupils and provide support to the teacher in the management of pupils. To provide specific learning activities for pupils not accessing a school place.

In line with the school’s mission statement the Teaching Assistant will be required to undertake a range of responsibilities and duties.

HOURS OF WORK: Term time only

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  Attend to the pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters including medical procedures following appropriate training.

2.  Supervise and support pupils ensuring their safety and access to learning.

3.  Assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans.

4.  Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.

5.  Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.

6.  Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.

7.  Encourage pupils to act independently as appropriate

8.  Prepare the classroom as directed for lessons and clear away afterwards and assist with the display of pupils work.

9.  Be aware of pupil problems, progress and achievements and report to the Teacher as agreed.

10.  Support the Teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.

11.  To exercise physical interventions as outlined in the school’s Behaviour Management Policy.

12.  Undertake pupil record keeping as requested.

13.  Provide objective and accurate feedback and reports as required, to the Teacher on pupil achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence.

14.  Liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with the Teacher within your role/responsibility and participate in feedback sessions/meetings with parents with, or as directed.

15.  Gather and report information from and to parents or carers as directed.

16.  Provide basic clerical and administrative support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, collecting money etc.

17.  Implement agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses/needs.

18.  Support pupils to understand instructions.

19.  Support pupils in undertaking ICT, literacy and numeracy tasks as directed by the teacher.

20.  Help pupils to access learning activities through specialist support.

21.  Prepare and maintain equipment and resources as directed by the teacher and assist pupils in their use.

22.  Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

23.  Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.

24.  Contribute to the overall ethos, work and aims of the school.

25.  Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.

26.  Attend relevant meetings as required.

27.  Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.

28.  Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school.

29.  Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required.

30.  To undertake tasks as directed by the Head Teacher or Deputy Head of School commensurate with the grade and duties of the post.

31.  To supervise break and lunchtime arrangements.

NOTE

The above duties are not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake tasks, roles and responsibilities as may be reasonably assigned to them by the Senior Management Team.
