ROLE PROFILE FOR LSCB LAY MEMBER

Main Purpose of the Role:

a)Participation in the decision making of the Board.

b)Provide a link to community groups, parents, carers and families on child safety issues.

c)Provide an improved understanding in the community of the LSCB’s child protection work.

d)Promote a wider public engagement on local child safety issues.

e)To bring an independent view to the Board to enable it to focus on the interests and needs of children & young people living in the Borough.

f)Reviewing and scrutinising the performance of the Board and its partnersagainst the delivery of the National & Local agreed outcomes and targets

Key Relationships:

a)Working with other members of the Board and its Committees.

b)Other key relationships are with members of the public, community groups, senior officers, and partner organisations including voluntary sector bodies.

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

a)Taking part in the work of the LSCB, including preparation in advance of the meeting by reading the published agenda and papers.

b)Bringing an element of external challenge to the LSCB discussions, decisions and performance.

c)Raising issues of public concern, for consideration and for future scrutiny at the Board and its Committees (where relevant).

d)Attending and contributing to the Committees and other working groups where relevant.

e)Promoting awareness, understanding and interest in the work of the Board and its partners in relation to child safety issues.

f)Liaising with community groups, parents, carers and families to recommend improvements to child protection arrangements and services.

g)Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of accountability and good governance practice.

h)Taking part in development activities arranged to improve Board members’ knowledge and understanding of its role and the topics it is scrutinising.

i)Maintaining the confidentiality of Board discussions in line with statute.

Requirements of the role:

a)Should represent a community group working in the Borough.

b)Through the group they represent and other forums, be able to communicate messages from the Board.

c)Be able to bring the views of the public to the Board in order to plan the Boards activities.

d)Be available for four annual Board meetings and the Board’s annual development day. Where agreed, the person may additionally volunteer to attend the LSCB’s Committee meetings.

Remuneration:

Attendance fees will be paid in line with BwD Independent Member for the Standards Committee.

Length of Appointment:

The person will be appointed for a period of three years.
