BaumbachandLeighmappedoutthenewmovieasonethatwouldaffordBaumbachtheopportunitytoonceagaininterlaceemotionalinsightwithbitingwit,ashehadinpicturesfromhisdebutKickingandScreamingtotheOscar-nominatedTheSquidandtheWhale.

BaumbachandLeighconceivedastorythatwouldtakethewriter/directortoLosAngelesforfilming.Severalyearsprior,Leighhadco-writtenandco-directedaLosAngeles-settaleofrelationships,TheAnniversaryParty.ButGreenbergwouldmakeevenmoreuseofthecity,asmuchmorethanabackdropforthesplendidlyrealizedcharactersinthescreenplay.

Itwouldbefilmedonatightseven-weekschedule,roughlythesameamountoftimethetitlecharacter,RogerGreenberg,findshimselfinLosAngeles.

“LosAngelesplayssuchabigpartinGreenbergthatit’sanothercharacter,addingtothevibeofthefilm,”sayslocationsmanagerStephensonCrossley.“Ididn’thavetoshowNoahalotofphotostogivehimdifferentoptions.Forthemostpart,heknewwherehewantedtogoandalotofthoseplaceswerewrittenintothescript-soitwasmyjobtogetusinthere.

“Manyofthelocationsveryspecificallynotedinthescripthadn’tbeenfeaturedinmoviesbefore,oratleastweren’tinstantlyrecognizable.Butweweren’tabig-budgetfilm,andsincethere’snogunfireorspecialeffectsinthepicture,it’slessdisruptivetoaplaceoracommunity.So,peoplewereprettyaccommodating.”

Forexample,thefamedMussoFrankGrillonHollywoodBoulevard,firstopenedin1919andalocalinstitutioneversince,wasscriptedasthesettingforamodestyetarguably(toGreenberg,atleast)excessivebirthdaycelebration.

Whileothermovieshadshotthereovertheyears,“wegotthemtocloseonaTuesdayforthefirsttimeintheirhistory,”saysCrossley.“Weexpressedtotheownerhowimportantitwasforustoshootthere,andhowitwouldhelpbringthefilmandthecharacterstolife.ThemandatefromNoahwasalwaysrealplacesandrealpeople.”Accordingly,therestaurant’sreal-lifewaiters,onea50-yearveteran,wereondutyforthesequence-andregularcustomerscameintobeextras.

OtherLAlocationswerealsospecificallywrittenintothescriptforverisimilitude.TheseincludedLucy’sElAdoberestaurant,acrossthestreetfromParamountPictures;theRunyonCanyonhikingtrails,160acresoftheSantaMonicaMountainsthatareasanctuaryfordogwalkers;theFairfaxdistrict,whereorthodoxJewsareseenwalkingtoandfromTempleeveryFridayandSaturday,alongsidethetrendsetterswhohittherestaurantsandboutiquesalongMelroseAvenue;andtheHighlandGardensHotel.

MostofthelocationswereinHollywoodorWestHollywood-accuratelyrepresentingwhatwouldbewithinwalkingdistanceforthenon-drivingGreenberg-includingaveterinarian’sofficewhereLeighandBaumbachhavetakentheirownpets.

TheSilverlakeareaartgalleryMachineProjectallowedtheproductiontoincorporateanexistingartinstallationintofilming.Crossleyexplains,“Theartistswerebuildingaforestinthatspace-andwehadonenighttoshoottherebeforethatexhibitionopened.

“Ourproductiondesigner,FordWheeler,workedwithmeatalltimes,mappingoutwhathewasdesigningintandemwithwherewewouldbeshooting.HopefullyGreenbergwillgiveaudiencesasenseofwhatit’sactuallyliketolive-orvisit-here.”

CinematographerHarrisSavidescapturedLosAngelesforGreenberginwidescreen,reteamingwiththefilmmakersaftertheirworkonMargotattheWedding.Thismadethenewmovieatoncemorecinematicandmorereal-almostdocumentary-like,giventheextensivelocationshooting.

Followingthelensingallaroundtown,thelatterhalfoftheshoottookplaceinandarounda1920s-erahouseintheHollywoodHillswhichwascastasthePhillipGreenberghome.

WheelerandhisteamtransformedthehousetoreflectboththeestablishedworldofPhilip’sfamilyandthetransientnatureofGreenberg’sexistenceintheirabsence.RecommendedbyacolleaguetoWheeler,setdecoratorElizabethKeenanimmediatelybeganworkingcloselywithhimandthefilmmakers.Shenotes,“Gettingthehousetogetherentailedseven-dayweeksforaboutamonth,frompaintcolourtestswithHarrisfilmingtoplayingwithwhitespaces.Butonthisshoot,therewasawonderfulcamaraderie.

“NoahandJenniferweresospecificaboutwhattheywantedtoshowandwhothesecharacterswere.Theyhadbeenthinkingaboutthepeopleinthisstoryforalongtime-whichactuallymadethingseasier.Workingwiththemwasaprocessofgettingtoknowthecharactersandpushingthestoryahead;forme,beingresponsibleforeverythingthatisn’tafloororawall,thesetdecorationonGreenbergextendedtobedsidereading,chosenperfumes,and-withthecostumedepartment-whatclothesacharacterwouldhaveinhisorhercloset.”

Ifclothesdomaketheman,then,ascostumedesignerMarkBridgesnotes,“There’sanelementofGreenbergthatlivesabitinthepastandhasn’treallymovedonfromacertaintime.Youseehowhe’smorestronglyattachedtoitthanhisfriendIvanis.Hestillfeelsasifhe’sstartingout,buttimeisgoingby.Hehaskindofalate‘80s/early‘90slook,incoloursthatyoudon’tseesomuchthesedaysanymore-likehiscaramelcottonsweater.Theideawastosubtlyevokeafeelingofanearliertimewithoutbroadcastingit.Evenhisshoeswereimportanttome;youmayneverseethemoncamera,butIworkfromthegroundup.

“IntermsoftheLAexperience,wewantedyoutorelatetoGreenberg’sdiscomfortwhen,say,he’satMussoFrankorattheafternoonbarbecue[filmedataLosFelizhouse]-andespeciallyforthebigpartysequence,wheresomeofthekidsareriffingonthe80sintheirfashionchoices,whichmakesthingsmoresurrealforhimthentheyalreadyare.Ifyoudon’tnoticethesethings,thenI’vedonemyjob,becauseit’suptoNoahandHarristoguideviewerstowhatthey’resupposedtosee.”

Elaboratingonhowmuchheprizesthecollaborativenatureofmakingmovies,Bridgesoffers,“Afterreadingthescript,Ialreadyseethemovieinmymind’seye.Then,workingwiththedirector,wecomparepointsofviewandreassessafteraroleiscast.IfeelfortunatethatI’mabletohelptheactorcreatehisrole.”

Tobringtheleadcharactertolife,thefilmmakerstappedBenStiller.Theactorsays,“IwasafanofTheSquidandtheWhale-thereality,thetone,andtheemotionofit-andMargotattheWeddingandKickingandScreaming.Noahfindshumourwithoutgoingforlaughs.

“SoIwasveryexcitedtogetthisscriptandthengettotalktohimaboutit.Whenwegotintotheprocessofworkingonthemovie,IknewIwaswithafilmmakerwhohadareallyclearvisionofwhathewantedtodoandapointofview-yetwasalsoopentowhat’sgoingoninthemoment.”

Knownasbeingskilledinimprovisationandthereforeabletoelevateascene,Stillerfoundthat“Noah’sworkisverydetailedandgoesintospecificsonthecharacters;it’sallwrittenonthepage.Werehearsedalot;itreallyhastobesaidaswritten.Sotherewashardlyanyimprovisationontheshootandthatwasexciting-nothavingtheburdenofhavingtocomeupwithsomethingtotrytomakeitbetter.WhatIhadtodowastomakesurethatIwouldgettherhythmofhisdialogue,hislines,towork.Somesequences-4-6pagesinthescript-werelikedoinglittleplays.

“Inthismovie,youseetheincrementalbuildingofarelationshipbetweentwopeoplewho-likeeverybody-haveissuesintheirlives.GreenbergandFlorenceareabletocometogetherandgetpastself-imposedbarriers.Untilnow,I’dneverdoneafilmwhichremindedmeoftheHalAshbyorRobertAltmanmoviesofthe1970sthatwouldexplorecharactersandfindtheirlittleprivatemomentsthathappenandthatyoudon’tusuallyseeinmovies.”

Thesemomentsarecaptured,marvelsStiller,“withnovideoplaybackonthesetforNoahtolookat.Wewoulddoalotoftakesofascene,withNoahmakingadjustments;‘Youwanttogetoutofthatroomquicker,’or‘Youreallyfeelletdownbythisguy.’Hewantstogetattherealityofthepeople.

“NoahandHarrisSavideswouldblockasceneandthenshootwithacoupleofcamerasatthesametime.Theymakeitseemsoeasy,butwhattheydotogethertakesalotofcouragecreatively.”

Savidesstatessimply,“Iliketokeepthingsnatural,andreal-whilealsorespectingthescript.”

Tothatpoint,Stillernotes,“Noahwritesthewaypeopletalk-andalsohow,inconversation,theydon’tlistentoeachother.Makingthismovie,IrealizedthatwassomethingIhadbeendoinginlifealot-someonewouldbetellingmesomethingandI’dbegoing‘uhhuh,uhhuh’whilethinkingaboutthenextthingIwantedtosay…!”

Heremarks,“AnotherbenefitformewasgettingtobeinamovieoppositeJenniferJasonLeigh,whoIthinkisoneofourgreatactors.Shewason-setmostofthetime,partneredwithhimonmakingthismovie.”

AnevenmorecrucialactingpartnerforStillerwasGretaGerwig,whowithGreenbergwasmakingherbiggestfilmtodate.Gerwigwaswellawareofherleap,commenting,“Icouldn’tbelievethatImightactuallybeinamovieforFocusFeaturesandScottRudin.IauditionedforNoahandJenniferintheirapartment,andsangalittlesongforthembecauseFlorenceisasinger.Ithought,‘Man,evenifIdon’tgetthis,I’mhappythatIgottogetthisfar.’

“Readingthescript,IknewexactlywhoFlorencewas.I’veneverreadapartthatsoperfectlyarticulatedwhatitmeanstobea25-year-oldgirlwho’sfiguringoutthatsheisgoingtokeepgettingolder.SoIwantedtobepartofthisbiggerfilm,notjustbecauseitseemedalogicalstep,butbecauseIhaveadeeploveofmoviesthatthisprojectspoketo.”

GerwigsawhercharacterofFlorenceas“someonewithalotofpluckandbeliefsthatthingswillworkout-despiteeverythingsortofpointingtothecontrary.Sheneverallowsherselftofeeldownaboutthingsorwallow,whichIthinkisadmirable.Also,she’sveryhonest-whichmakesherveryfunny;shehasnofilterinstatingtheexactreasonwhyshemightbeuncomfortableinacertainsituation.

“Inprivatemoments,sheisabletoreflectabouthowherlifemaynotbegoingexactlyasplanned.Yetshekeepsmovingforward,whichisadmirable.Herabilitytotakecareofherselfgrowsoverthecourseofthefilm.”

GerwigherselffelttakencareofbyhercolleaguesonGreenberg.Sheremarks,“WhatultimatelyturnedouttobesimilartothesmallermoviesI’vedoneisthattheymadeitallfeellikeaclose-knitfamily.Therewasnotasenseofhierarchy.AlthoughRhysIfanswasinaweeverydayathowmuchfoodtherewasfromthecraftservicestruck;hewouldtakepicturestosendtofriendsinLondon…

“Wedidacoupleofweeksofrehearsal.Rightaway,NoahandBenandJennifercreatedthiscontinuumformebecausetheyareallsomuchmoreexperiencedthanIam.Theycreatedazoneofcomfort,wheretherewasprotectionandafeelingofsafetyinwhatweweredoing,eveninthehardestscenesbetweenBenandmyself.Ben-whoplungedinwitheverythinghehad-wouldgivemeasmuchofaperformanceinourscenestogetherevenwhenthecamerawasnotonhim.”

Stillercomments,“WithGreta,youdon’tfeelyou’reacting;youfeellikeyou’rejustlivingreallifewithher.Sheseemsincapableofbeingfalseoncamera,andnothingshedoesfeelsforced.She’sabeautifulperson,andthatcomesthroughinwhatshedoes.Shehasatotalcommitmenttothematerialandtothecharactershe’splaying.”

BridgesdressedFlorenceassomeonewho“doesn’thavealotofmoneyandisalittleuncomfortableinherskin.Soshehasaneclecticmixofclothing.Gretaistall,soit’slikethecharacterisanawkwardcolt-sometimesstunningandsometimesclearlystillgrowing.”

IntheroleofGreenberg’sall-but-bestfriendIvan,Welsh-bornactorRhysIfanswaskeenlyattunedtohow“weallspendtimekeepingourownGreenbergsatbay.IvannowhasdifferentprioritiesanddifferentaspirationsfromGreenberg,butisstillfullyawareoftheonesthattheysharedatonetime.Thescriptwassowell-writtenthatitwasclearwheremycharacterwascomingfrom.Inalmostallofhisscenes,Ivandoesn’tsaywhathewantstosay.

“ItwasdecidedtomakemycharacterEnglish-whichmadethingseasierforme,butalsogaveIvanan‘otherness’thatenhancesthefilm;IknowalotofIvansinLA,andthey’reBritish,funnilyenough.Tome,everyoneinthestoryseemsslightlyisolated,Greenberginparticular.ButIvanseemstohavethemechanismstocopealittlebetterthanGreenbergdoes.

Ifansadds,“I’mthesameageasIvan,andthisstoryraisesquestionsaboutbeing40andwhetheryou’veachievedwhatyousetouttoachieve.Thisisaveryfunnycomedythatcomesfromaseriousplace.

“Noah’swritingisanalyticalbutneverjudgmental.Ifindhisdialoguetobeanuanced,sonicobservationofthewaywespeaktoeachother,whilethehumanityofitforcesyoutofacethetruthofthescenes.WorkingwithhimasadirectorwaseverythingIhopeditwouldbeandmore.Therewasaprocessofexploration,sowewoulddoalotoftakestodigdeeperanddeeper-whilestickingtothescript.”

Stillerrecalls,“RhysandIwereplayingdecades-oldfriends,butwedidn’tgetachancetomeetuntiljustbeforewestartedshooting.Luckily,Rhyshasincredibleaccessibilityasaperson,andallthesechopsasanactor.Rightoffthebat,heandIwereabletofigureoutthedynamicforthesetwoguyswhohadn’tseeneachotherinawhile.ThatwasbecauseitwasspecificinNoah’sscript.

Q:Noah,yourmoviesaswriter/directorhavebeensetontheEastCoast.WhenyouthoughtofthecharacterofGreenberg,didyouimmediatelythinkofhiminLosAngeles?OrdidyouthinkofGreenbergandwhohewasfirst,andthenthinkoftheplacehewouldbefromandwouldbereturningto?

NoahBaumbach:EarlyversionsofthecharacterofGreenberghavecomeupindifferentthingsI’veworkedon.NotnecessarilymoviesI’vemade,butmaybehalf-writtenscriptsorideas.IhaveadraftofaplaywithacharacterwhosharessomeofGreenberg’stemperament.

AcentralideaIhadinwritingthescriptwasthatIwantedtomakeamovieinthetraditionofAmericannovelsthatI’veloved,booksbyPhilipRothandSaulBellowandJohnUpdike,storiesaboutmenatcrisispointsintheirlives.Peoplehavemademoviesofsomeoftheirnovels,butIfeltitwaspossibletocreateamoviethatwaspartofthattraditionanddonepurelycinematically.

IalsowantedtomakeamoviethatshowedLAasarealcity,notanindustrytown.JenniferisfromLAandthroughherIstartedtoexperiencethecitythisway.PartofmyinspirationinmakingGreenbergwasseeingLAasthisremarkable,uniqueplacewherepeopleactuallylivedandraisedfamilies.

I’dbeenre-watchingsomegreatLAmoviesfromthe1970s,moviesbyPaulMazurskyandJohnCassavetesandHalAshbyandRobertAltman.Theyallhadverydistinctvisionsofthecity.IloveAltman’sTheLongGoodbye;theLAofthatmovieissospecificandappealingandithasnothingtodowiththemovieindustry.JoanDidionandLeonardMichaels-bothofwhomwriteaboutLA-werealsoaninspiration.

JenniferJasonLeigh:SinceIgrewupinLosAngeles,IseethecityinaverypersonalwayandIwantedtoshowLosAngelesthewayIgrewupinit.There’salightinLAthatisverydifferentfromtheEastCoast,andthere’sanexpansiveness.ThereismuchthatisuglyinLA,butalsoakindofbeautyintheugliness.IlovethattherearestillsectionsoftheSunsetStripwithouthigh-rises.Thatyoucanbeatafarmersmarketsurroundedby1920sCraftsmanhomesandthenhalfwaydownthestreetisaninety-nine-centstore.Thewaythedustcatchesthelight,howgreenitis.Thebeautyoftheskyinwinter.

JJL:Therearesomany.It’smyhome.Everylocationinthefilmisaplaceweknowwell.It’shardtosaywhichismyfavourite;Greenberg’swalksupFairfaxanddrivesdownLaBrea,FlorencedrivingonSunset,theoutdoormarketinSilverlake,thehikes,Lucy’sElAdobe,eventhevet’s.

Q:ThisisyoursecondprojectwithcinematographerHarrisSavides.HowdidyouchallengeyourselvesanewafterMargotattheWedding,whichhadhimworkinginaveryprobing,rugged,style?

NB:Margotwasrougher-hewn,hand-held;weusedveryoldlensesandflashedthefilm.ButwewantedGreenbergtobeexpansive.Althoughit’saboutamantryingtodonothing,theworldaroundhimisopen,beautiful,andactive.Soweshotwidescreen.WelookedatmovieslikePlayItAsItLays,andatphotographsbyWilliamEgglestonandEdRuscha.

Q:Theclimacticpartysequenceisinthemovietraditionofbashesthatescalatepsychologicallyandphysically.Ontheset,howdidyouencouragethekeyactors-likethetagteamofBrieLarsonJunoTemple-andthesupportingactors-likeDaveFranco-tomakeitflowfreely(or,not)?

JamesandIhititoffimmediately,andcoincidentallyhe’dplannedtorecordhisnewrecordinLAwhilewewereshooting.Sohewasaround,ontheset,inthemovie,watchingdailies.Hissongsactasanothervoiceinthemovie.

ManyoftheothersongsinGreenberg-AlbertHammond’s“ItNeverRainsinSouthernCalifornia,”DuranDuran’s“TheChauffeur,”PaulLindaMcCartney’s“UncleAlbert/AdmiralHalsey”-werewrittenintothescript.Thesesongscomefromthecharacters.

NB:It’ssomethingthathappenedtohimthatwasoutofhiscontrolandit’sgivenhimascare.Hespendsalotofhistimetryingtomaintaincontrolofhislife,andthenhegetssetoffinwaysthathecan’tcontrol,andyouseethatinthemovie.Thereisrealcontrastfromtheearlyscene,whenFlorencecomesovertogethercheckandheplaysasongonhisiPod-theAlbertHammondsong-he’smorewithdrawn,shyeven.Andthenlateron,whentheysing“HappyBirthdayToYou”tohim,hecan’thelpbutgetfurious.SomethingBenandItalkedaboutalotwashowGreenbergisalwaystryingtoavoidembarrassment.He’stryingtofixalifeforhimselfthatskirtsasmuchhumiliationaspossible,whichofcourseisimpossible.Ithinkthebreakdownitself,though,wassomethingthatwasevenbeyondthat:hisbody,hisemotionallifeandhispsyche,allgaveway.Hedoesn’ttellpeopleaboutthebreakdown,herationalizeswherehe’sfoundhimselfinlifeasadeliberatedecision;“I’mdoingnothingdeliberately.”Sohe’sstillhidingalot;Ithink,often,atleastinmyexperience,peoplewho’vehademotionalcollapsesdon’tnecessarilychangerightaway.It’sinterestingthattheonlypersonhetellsaboutthecollapseisBeth,someonehewascloseto15yearsagobutismerelyanacquaintancenow.

JJL:Thatwasn’tthethinkingwhenwewerewritingit.Butwhenwebeganthinkingaboutcasting,itsuddenlyseemedlikeagoodidea.IlovedtheideaofplayingoppositeBenandgettingtodothatincrediblyawkwardsceneintherestaurant.BethhassoclearlymovedoninherlifeandGreenberg,whosheoncecaredfor,hasn’t.Ilikedthecomedyinthesceneformeasanactress;IlovedhowthesceneexposesthedepthofGreenberg’sattachmenttopastinjurieshe’sinflictedandpastrelationshipshehasn’tmovedonfrom,andhisinabilitytoliveinthepresent.
